A New Boss: Jake Poetzl
2026/11/01
A New Boss:
1. All Things are to Be done for the Lord Jesus (Col 3:17)
"Whatever you do, whether in word or deed"
"Do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus"
2. All Work Is to Be Done with Sincerity and Reverence For the Lord (Col 3:22)
Slaves , obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on your and to curry their favor, ut with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord.
The Lord is more concerned with how we work than the outcomes of our work.
3. All work is to Be Done with Heart For the Lord, Not for People (emphasis on people pleasing) (Col. 3:23)
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.
The Lords is more concerned with the heart behind our labor than the nature of our labor.
4. All Work Serves the Lord, and is Rewarded by the Lord. (Col 3:24)
The Lord is more concerned with our identity being shaped by serving him than being shaped by our careers of human masters.
Work Life: Providence & Endurance
2026/10/25
LESSONS ON GOD'S PROVIDENCE
1. God is present in the painful season of our work
"The Lord was with Joseph"
2. God intensionally Orchestrates behind the scenes
Joseph recognized that human malice does not derail divine purpose.
3. God prepares us through trials.
The hardships Joseph suffered were not wasted dead ends; ther were a divine training ground.
4. God prepares others through our trails
When Joseph finally stood in power before the brothers who sold him, he did not seek retribution. Joseph saw the larger picture of God's heart of grace for his family and the world.
LESSON OF ENDURANCE
1. We are to be faithful in the hidden seasons
Whether serving diligently as a slave in Potiphar's house or managing responsibilities inside the Egyptian prison, Joseph did not wait for ideal conditions to work with excellence.
2. We are the have integrity even when it costs us.
When tempted and later wronged, Joseph anchored his decisions in his relationship with God rather than short-term survival or comfort.
3. We are to refuse bitterness even after betrayal.
Joseph was thrown into a pit, sold into slavery by his own brothers, falsely accused by Potiphar's wife, and forgotten by the cupbearer.
4. We are to exercise patience when life is unfair.
Doin the right thing does not always yield an immediate reward; sometimes it leads to more testing, more suffering.
Sabbath Rest - Philip Perkins
2026/10/18
1. God blessed the seventh day and made it holy at Creation. (Gen 2:1-3)
- Why did God rest? Looking back over creation - it is good.
- We are created in his image for a rhythm of work and holy rest.
2. God commanded the Israelites to keep the Sabbath day holy. (Ex 20:8-11)
- God created us and knows how we flourish.
- Embracing our God-given limits requires trust in God.
- To keep a Sabbath rest is to declare our freedom from slavery.
3. Jesus restored the heart of the Sabbath. (Mark 2:23-28)
- The Sabbath was created as a gift for mankind.
- A true Sabbath is filled with rest, delight, and worship.
- A day of rest requires planning and a battle of the mind.
4. The Sabbath is fulfilled in Christ.
- The Sabbath is a shadow of the true rest found in Christ. "for anyone who
enter's God's rest also rests form their works, just as God did from his." (Heb. 4:9-
10). All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by
his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. (Rom 3:23-24).
- The Gospel teaches us to rest in Christ's finished work of salvation. We must let
go of our inner striving to prove ourselves or to save the world - and trust Christ
to save our souls and rule the world.
5. When we create times of rest, delight, and worship we point to Christ and give people a taste of eternity.
- Sabbath is a taste of eternity.
- Example: Eric Liddel in "Chariots of Fire."
- When we keep times of Sabbath rest - any day - we make the invisible rest in
our heart visible for others - so we may all enjoy it together.
Practical Steps to create times of Sabbath rest:
1. Begin with worship, remind yourself who God is and who you are.
2. Balance Sabbath time (rest, delight, worship).
3. Build Sabbath time into each day.
4. Do Sabbath rest together / in community - brainstorm with friends and family - how can we create Sabbath rest in our lives? How can we create time for rest, delight, and worship together?
Why Do You Worry?
2026/10/11
Questions Jesus Asks - Why do you Worry?
(Matthew 6: 25-34)
1. Jesus connects worry to our sense of value.
- "do I matter?'
"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or
about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body
more than clothes?" Matthew 6:25.
2. Jesus connects worry to a lack of faith.
- How capable is Jesus?
- Can he handle this?
- How responsive?
- Does he care?
3. Jesus connects worry to pagan activity.
- Paganism - the belief that the god's must be appeased.
- You can trust Jesus.
- You do not need to get his attention.
- You do not need to appease his wrath.
4. An alternate pursuit.
- But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given
to you as well.
- What am I chasing?
- A new pursuit. I'm not seeking me, I'm seeking him.
The Curse of Work - Jake Poetzl
2026/10/04
Work Life (week 2)
1. Work Becomes Difficult (Genesis 3:17-19).
- Our work produces pain (Gen3:17).
- Our work faces opposition (Gen3:18).
- Our work is never finished (Gen3:19).
Before the fall, Adam and Eve experienced a significant connection with their work, after the fall it felt like dislocation.
2. Work Becomes Selfish (Genesis 11:2-4).
- Selfish-Ambition "That we may make a name for ourselves.."
- Ecclesiastes 4:4 "I saw that all labor and achievement spring from man's envy of his neighbor."
- Proverbs 6 "God hates haughty eyes." (People who through a sense of superiority look down on deplorables).
- Self-security: Jesus tells the parable about how work can lend itself toward selfish impulse to maintain stability and control at the expense of others (Luke 12:15-16, 18, 20-21).
3. Work Becomes Idolatrous.
- Work was designed to honor God, not replace God.
- "No more let sin and sorrows grow, Nor thorns infest the ground; He comes to make His blessings flow, Far as the cures is found." - Isaac Watts.
- Jesus is our pain-bearer (Isaiah 53:4).
