Celebrating 400 Episodes: Leadership Lessons with Todd Nesloney and Dr. Sarah Johnson
2026/10/18
Four hundred episodes. Countless connections. And plenty of lessons that never made it into principal school.
In this special 400th episode of Aspire to Lead, Joshua Stamper welcomes back two friends who have helped shape the podcast’s journey: Todd Nesloney and Sarah Johnson. From Todd’s encouragement to launch the show, and his appearance as the very first guest, to Sarah’s collaboration on Aspire to Rise, this celebration brings together the friendships, laughter, and shared learning behind the microphone.
Together, they look back on their early days as campus administrators and share what they wish they had known before stepping into leadership. The conversation explores letting go of the pressure to fix every problem, navigating imposter syndrome, protecting mental health, clarifying core values, and learning to share leadership. Todd and Sarah also reflect on the quiet moments with students, staff, and families that make the hard days worth it.
Plus, Todd offers a preview of his upcoming book, More Than Enough: Breaking Free from the Lies That Tell You Otherwise. Join us for a heartfelt celebration of the people who open doors for others—and a reminder that your impact matters, regardless of your title.

398. Compliance Is the Baseline Not the Finish Line: Featuring Korenne Wolken
2026/10/05
What if compliance was not the finish line for special education services, but the starting point for providing every student with the instruction and support they deserve?
In this episode, Joshua Stamper sits down with Korenne Wolken, Director of ANW Special Education Interlocal, to explore how leaders can create stronger, more collaborative, and student-centered special education programs. Korenne shares why Specially Designed Instruction must move beyond curriculum and paperwork to address each student’s unique needs, how advocacy can influence decisions beyond a local district, and why supporting staff as individuals is essential to building morale and improving outcomes for students.
About Korenne Wolken
Korenne Wolken serves as the Director of ANW Special Education and has been with the organization for 17 years. Before stepping into administration, she taught for 10 years before becoming the Dayschool Principal. She then served as a Coordinator for 2 years and is currently in her 5th year as Director.
Korenne originally set a career goal of becoming a coordinator and shares that she never imagined one day serving as the Director of ANW Special Education. She considers it an incredible honor to lead an organization she has dedicated so much of her career to supporting.

She strives to ensure ANW provides the training, resources, and support needed for staff to grow and be their very best for students.
Korenne is passionate about ensuring every student has access to the supports they need to succeed, recognizing that success looks different for every individual. She is also deeply committed to helping students build the skills necessary to become successful and productive members of society.

397. The Power of Presence in Leadership: Featuring Ronnel Blackmon
2026/09/28
What changes when you stop waiting to feel motivated and start showing up with discipline, purpose, and presence?
In this episode, Joshua Stamper is joined by speaker, coach, entrepreneur, endurance athlete, and leadership strategist Ronnel Blackman. Ronnel shares the P.R.E.S.E.N.C.E. framework, a practical approach to helping leaders show up more intentionally in their professional and personal lives.
Ronnel explains why discipline is more reliable than motivation, especially when leaders are tired, stressed, distracted, or managing competing responsibilities. He also shares why effective communication begins with listening, emotional awareness, clarity, and a willingness to receive feedback that helps us grow.
This conversation explores how leaders can build stronger systems, keep promises to themselves, create meaningful relationships, and lead in a way that makes others feel seen, heard, and energized. Ronnel also breaks down the eight elements of P.R.E.S.E.N.C.E., including physical discipline, resilience, effective communication, self-image, energy, environment, community, execution, and elevated purpose.
About Ronnel Blackmon
Ronnel Blackmon is a keynote speaker, professional emcee, entrepreneur, marathoner, husband, and father who helps leaders understand a powerful truth: before people experience your leadership, they experience your presence.
Through his P.R.E.S.E.N.C.E. Framework, Ronnel helps educators and leaders strengthen three essential disciplines—physical discipline, resilience, and effective communication—so they can better lead themselves, connect with others, and create meaningful impact.
His philosophy is simple: Discipline Over Motivation. Because motivation may get you started, but discipline determines who you become.

Aspire Mailbag: Creating Teacher Goals That Build Growth and Ownership
2026/09/20
How can school leaders give teachers ownership over their professional growth while still creating alignment around campus priorities?
In this Aspire Mailbag episode, Joshua Stamper and Jeff Gargas tackle two timely questions from school leaders: How much autonomy should teachers have when setting professional-growth goals, and how can a school create communication systems that keep staff, students, and families informed?
Joshua and Jeff discuss why teacher goals should be shaped through conversation rather than handed down as demands. They explore the balance between individual growth goals, team goals, and schoolwide initiatives, along with the value of helping teachers add meaningful skills to their leadership and instructional tool belts.
They also break down what makes school communication work. From choosing platforms that families actually use to sharing positive stories, avoiding information overload, and meeting families in the community, this conversation offers practical ideas for building trust and making sure your message reaches the people who need it most.

395. Leading Without Apology With Dr. Carrie Mugridge and Dr. Jennifer Perez Bessolo
2026/09/06
What would change if more women stopped waiting to feel completely ready and began stepping into the leadership roles they are already capable of leading?
In this episode, Joshua Stamper is joined by Dr. Carrie Mugridge and Dr. Jennifer Perez Bessolo, coauthors of Leading Without Apology: Empowering Women in Educational Leadership, From Aspiration to Advancement. Together, they unpack the internal doubts and external barriers that can keep talented women from pursuing school and district leadership roles.
Carrie and Jennifer explore why many women remain in the classroom longer, underestimate their qualifications, and hesitate to seek advancement without a direct invitation. They also discuss imposter syndrome, the likability conundrum, the pressure to be both strong and agreeable, and the value of embracing qualities such as emotional intelligence as leadership strengths.
About Dr. Carrie Mugridge
Dr. Mugridge is a nationally recognized educational leader and women’s leadership advocate with more than 20 years of experience shaping school systems, developing leaders, and elevating women’s voices in education. She has directed major efforts in curriculum design, MTSS implementation, federal programs, and professional learning, and she is widely known for creating supportive, high-expectation coaching systems for teachers and administrators. Dr. Mugridge’s passion for advancing women in leadership extends beyond her district. She serves as a Program Advisor for a Women in Leadership Program, where she mentors aspiring female leaders across the country. She is also a published author in the Under the Umbrella USA series and a national presenter, with sessions such as “Empowering Women in Education: Navigating Leadership & Career Pathways” and “Women in K–12 Educational Leadership: Leaning In and Lessons Learned.” Throughout her career, Dr. Mugridge has been recognized for excellence in teaching and leadership, including being named one of the Top 50 Women Leaders in Kansas, a Kansas Teacher of the Year Region 3 Finalist, and a U.S. Department of Education Teaching Ambassador Fellowship Finalist. Her leadership philosophy is rooted in servant leadership, authenticity, and the belief that women thrive when they are supported, challenged, and unapologetically themselves. Now, as a consultant and women’s leadership coach, Dr. Mugridge helps emerging and aspiring leaders build confidence, develop strategic clarity, and step boldly into leadership roles. Through personalized coaching, speaking engagements, and leadership development experiences, she equips women to lead with purpose, resilience, and impact.

394. How to Flourish in a Tired and Stressed Out World: Featuring Phil Januszewski
2026/08/30
What if feeling less tired and more inspired is not about waiting for life to slow down, but about making small, intentional choices in the middle of the chaos? In this episode, Joshua Stamper welcomes back former high school chemistry and physics teacher, keynote speaker, and author Phil Januszewski to discuss his new book, Too Damn Happy: Flourishing in a Tired and Uninspired World. After 20 years in the classroom, Phil left a career he loved to help educators and other adult givers build lives they do not need to escape from. Phil shares practical, research-informed strategies for moving beyond survival mode and toward greater energy, connection, resilience, and purpose. The conversation explores the difference between simply eliminating negativity and actively flourishing, why scheduling joy matters, how micro-moments of connection can change a school culture, and why leaders need to protect time for the things that truly refill their tank. About Phil Januszewski Phil Januszewski is a nationally recognized keynote speaker who empowers the “givers” of the world to flourish personally so they can create greater impact professionally; all while avoiding burnout, boredom, and cynicism. A 20-year educator turned full-time motivator; Phil blends science, storytelling, and humor to inspire audiences to recharge their energy and reignite their purpose. With a background in chemistry, a master’s in teaching leadership, and a certification in positive education, he lives out his mission of creating and spreading happiness through motivation, education, and entertainment; all with a little extra tattoo ink and a whole lot of heart. 2026/08/20
Are you building meaningful leadership experience, or are you simply staying busy?
In Part 4 of the Aspiring Leaders Bonus Series, Joshua Stamper helps aspiring leaders identify the experiences they still need before stepping into their next role. Joshua shares practical examples of experiences you can pursue, along with questions that will help you identify where your leadership portfolio is strong and where you may need intentional growth.
You do not need to have every skill mastered before earning a leadership role. You do need to show that you are willing to seek opportunities, learn from experience, reflect on your impact, and continue growing. Choose one leadership experience you need to gain this school year, set a realistic deadline, and take the first step toward making it happen.

2026/08/19
What kind of leader do you want to be when the title finally arrives?
In Part 3 of the Aspiring Leaders Bonus Series, Joshua Stamper helps aspiring leaders move beyond simply naming the role they want and begin defining the values, mission, vision, and commitments that will guide their leadership. A title may change, responsibilities may shift, and your career path may take unexpected turns, but your leadership identity can serve as the compass that keeps you grounded.
In this episode, you will explore how to avoid copying another leader’s style, make decisions that align with your values, and communicate your leadership purpose with greater clarity and confidence. Joshua also shares his own experience of stepping into a dean of students role and realizing that leading according to others’ expectations was not creating the impact he hoped to make.
Use the reflection questions below to begin building your leadership identity. This is not meant to be a final answer. It is a personal, authentic first draft that can evolve as you gain experience, receive feedback, and continue growing as a leader.
Reflection Questions
When I am at my best as a leader, I am…When I am struggling as a leader, I tend to…What values do I want to guide my decisions?Ten years from now, what do I hope people say about my leadership impact? What kind of culture do I want to create?

BONUS Series – Aspiring Leaders Part 2: Growth Does Not Happen in Isolation
2026/08/18
Leadership growth does not happen in isolation. While your experiences, credentials, and drive all matter, the right relationships can help you gain perspective, identify meaningful opportunities, and take the next step in your leadership journey.
In this episode, Joshua Stamper explores why aspiring leaders need a strong network of support and introduces four people who can make a meaningful difference: a mentor, a coach, a campus advocate, and a district connector. You will reflect on who currently supports your goals, where you may need to build stronger connections, and how to approach leadership relationships with authenticity rather than a transactional mindset.
Joshua also shares practical ways to begin building trust with leaders, including asking for a conversation, following up with gratitude, offering value, seeking feedback, and consistently following through. Your next leadership opportunity may begin with one genuine conversation.
