Description

Chicago, IL - Where conversation flows...and life is explored -- that’s where the new podcast, Rhythm of Life, begins. Initial episodes include a fascinating conversation Steve Ordower has with filmmaker, Bob Hercules about his illustrious career, including his most recent Peabody Award winning documentary, Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise. They touch on the power of forgiveness in this project as well as in another potent film Hercules directed, Forgiving Dr. Mengele. We also hear from the accomplished journalist, author and filmmaker, Alex Kotlowitz as he discusses his winding and atypical career with Bob Hercules. He reflects on writing books at the intersection of race, poverty and violence as in, There Are No Children Here, as well as working with such luminaries in different mediums as Ira Glass and Michael Moore. Another engrossing episode is with Mavis Staples, as she talks with Steve Ordower about her incredible musical journey from the time she started signing with her family, to collaborating with Prince. She also reflects how her father, Pops, was playing blues licks on the guitar. They simply didn’t realize the influence the blues was having on their music, that give it such a distinctive sound.Join us to stimulate your mind, and broaden your perspective.Another episode features an insightful conversation Bob Hercules has with musician, visual artist, and political activist, Jon Langford. According to the LA Times...Summarizing Jon Langford’s contributions to punk rock and all of its permutations, as well as his career-long obsession with American roots music, is liable to overwhelm anyone, exploring such topics as political frustration and career disillusionment. Audience members also get an inside and captivating look into making the groundbreaking documentary film about interfaith marriage, Leaps of Faiths. Filmmaker Bob Hercules sits down with co-directors Steve Ordower and David Kovacs to talk about this 5 1⁄2 year journey, and how they observed that this relatively new structure of raising children in two faiths has created a powerful paradigm for genuine acceptance. And, Actor Ernie Hudson reflects on his journey through his prolific career with Steve Ordower, including working with such icons as Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, along with his reflections on what draws him to certain projects over others.Enrich your life by listening to the Rhythm Of Life podcast: Where conversation flows...and life is explored.Future episodes will feature in-depth conversations with such notable figures as Newton Minow, former chair of the FCC, reflecting on how the media and television, which he called “a vast wasteland,” have evolved. Stephan Garnett, lecturer at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, will share his perspective on the state of journalism today.

The Promise, The Risk, And The Future Of Healing Ep. 38
2026/10/08
Psychedelic medicine is attracting growing attention, but the story is more complex than hype or miracle cures. In this episode, Steve Ordower steps back from his full conversation with Lisa Solomon to explore the unanswered questions surrounding psychedelic therapies. From psilocybin and MDMA to ketamine and ibogaine, the discussion looks at why these substances are being studied for trauma, depression, addiction, and other forms of distress. It also examines why preparation, medical screening, set and setting, and integration matter, and why a powerful experience alone does not guarantee lasting change. The episode holds both possibility and uncertainty in view: psychedelic therapies may help some people, but they are not risk-free or a substitute for appropriate medical care. Healing also depends on ethical support, community, integration, and time. Listen the full conversation on Apple Podcasts with Lisa Solomon: Episode 37 of the Rhythm of Life Podcast, “The Trauma Breakthrough That Is Changing Lives.” Episode 37 of the Rhythm of Life Podcast, “The Trauma Breakthrough That Is Changing Lives.” You can also watch this episode on YouTube: Episode 37 of the Rhythm of Life Podcast, “The Trauma Breakthrough That Is Changing Lives.” 00:00 - Why psychedelic medicine is getting renewed attention 02:24 - Traditional plant medicine and Western clinical models 03:23 - How altered states may loosen rigid mental patterns 04:49 - Preparation, set and setting, and integration 06:17 - Integration after addiction, trauma, and life disruption 06:47 - Moral injury and psychedelic therapy for veterans 07:15 - Why MDMA-assisted therapy is drawing interest for PTSD 07:43 - Psilocybin research for depression, addiction, and serious illness 08:36 - Ketamine, rapid relief, and the importance of supervision 09:06 - Ibogaine’s promise, risks, and cultural roots 10:27 - Ibogaine’s growing political visibility 11:24 - Cardiac screening and emergency planning 12:22 - Medication guidance, vulnerability, and other safety risks 13:20 - Why legality or religious branding does not prove safety 13:50 - Microdosing: what the evidence can and cannot say 14:46 - The tension between a slow medical system and a fast marketplace 15:44 - Lisa Solomon’s path into psychedelic advocacy 17:09 - Why hope needs evidence, ethics, and long-term support 18:32 - Further resources and closing guidance #psychedelicmedicine #healing #neuroplasticity #plantmedicine #naturalhealing
The Trauma Breakthrough That Is Changing Lives - with Lisa Solomon Ep. 37
2026/06/28
Can psychedelic therapies help heal trauma, PTSD, addiction, and depression? In this fascinating conversation, Steve Ordower sits down with Lisa Solomon to explore the rapidly evolving science behind psychedelic-assisted therapy, including psilocybin, ketamine, MDMA, ibogaine, and ayahuasca. Together they discuss how these therapies may help reshape the brain through neuroplasticity, why preparation and integration matter, and what the latest research means for veterans, trauma survivors, and anyone interested in the future of mental health. In this episode, you’ll learn: * How psychedelic-assisted therapy differs from recreational use * The science of neuroplasticity and healing trauma * Why integration therapy is essential for lasting change * The latest research on PTSD, addiction, depression, and chronic pain * Safety considerations, legal access, and the future of psychedelic medicine Whether you’re curious about cutting-edge mental health treatments, neuroscience, or holistic healing, this conversation offers a thoughtful, balanced look at one of today’s most important areas of medical research. Disclaimer: The content of this episode is for educational purposes only and does not constitute medical advice. Always seek the guidance of a qualified healthcare professional regarding any medical or mental health concerns. Note of clarification regarding Ibogaine: Lisa Solomon mentioned that it can be a very rough ride with lots of purging, which is correct when it includes the physical detox from opioids, which it does very well. It detoxes physically very quickly, in addition to the emotional/mental health, seeing, and healing. Clarification: The “negative” physical side-effects (purging, sweating, etc) tend to be more extreme for those detoxing from prolonged opioid use since the medicine facilitates a rapid, physical detox. More resources from Lisa Solomon: Global Psychedelic Society is a network of local psychedelic societies. The chapters can vary greatly in the types of support they offer (some focused more on legislative efforts, others on the community of people who use medicines) https://globalpsychedelic.org/locator/ https://firesideproject.org/ https://zendoproject.org/ https://maps.org/ https://dancesafe.org/ https://chacruna.net/ Subscribe for more conversations exploring health, psychology, neuroscience, longevity, and the ideas shaping a healthier future. #psychedelictherapy #mentalhealth #traumahealing #ptsd #neuroplasticity

From Civil Rights to Religion: Rabbi ALLEN SECHER'S remarkable journey Ep. 27
2025/07/23
Today we’re excited to present an interview with Rabbi Allen Secher. Allen marked his 90th birthday earlier this year – he’s a rabbi, civil and human rights activist, radio host, television producer, actor, author and public speaker. He was ordained in the early 1960s, and while serving as rabbi in Massapequa, N.Y., he became one of the Freedom Riders during the civil rights movement. Rabbi Secher joined other clergy members, working with Dr. Martin Luther King, Ralph Abernathy, Andrew Young and others to fight segregation in Albany, Georgia and St. Augustine, Florida. And in fact, the day after they demonstrated there, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In 1991, Rabbi Secher and his wife, Ina Albert, founded Makom Shalom, Chicago's first Jewish Renewal congregation, melding traditional and holistic paths (mysticism, meditation, and gender equality) toward spiritual intimacy. Rabbi Secher is deeply committed to supporting interfaith couples and families, and has officiated and co-officiated more than 2,000 weddings and other interfaith life cycle ceremonies. For many years, he and Father John Cusick served as advisors to The Jewish/Catholic Dialogue Group of Chicago, and in 1993, the organization also founded the Chicago Interfaith Family School, which educates children and their parents in the traditions of Judaism and Christianity. Today Allen continues to serve as one of the rabbis of the Family School. We’ll hear Allen in conversation with David Kovacs. In 2019, David and I produced and directed the documentary Leaps of Faiths, an exploration of interfaith marriage and families. #religion #religionandfaith #rabbi #jewish #interfaith #interfaithminister #interfaithmarriage LEAPS OF FAITHS documentary

Left vs Right: The Political Lie We All Believed with BLAKE MINNERLY - Ep. 25
2025/02/26
To purchase the books mentioned in this episode, just click on the titles below, and you will be using our affiliate links, which helps the show. Thank you! The Myth of Left and Right: How the Political Spectrum Misleads and Harms America (STUDIES IN POSTWAR AMERICAN POLITICAL) Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media Today on the show we welcome Blake Minnerly, who is launching his own podcast show called, "Ambiology" which examines the political left/right spectrum in the United States from a historical perspective. Much of what we think is Left or Right politically actually has shifted over time - and this paradigm has become a significant stumbling block for citizens to view issues on a case-by-case basis that would allow for a substantive understanding of a given issue in a nuanced way. Instead, and consequently, this Left/right divide incentivizes people to lump issues together into a tribal identity, which creates a psychological barrier to useful and empowering insight on important matters. This ubiquitous and insidious paradigm conditions us in the U.S. to view political issues through a powerful filter, which oftentimes has us discount perspectives from the “bad” tribe without fully understanding the perspective in the first place. This show will investigate the beginnings of Public Relations and propaganda with people such as Edward Bernays (the nephew of Sigmond Freud) who has been criticized for manipulating public opinion, often in ways that undermined individual autonomy and democratic values. His best-known campaigns include a 1929 effort to promote female smoking by branding cigarettes as feminist "Torches of Freedom", and his work for the United Fruit Company in the 1950s, connected with the CIA-orchestrated overthrow of the democratically elected Guatemalan government in 1954. And, Ivy “Leadbelly” Lee who preceded Bernays, who many historians credit him with originating modern crisis communications. He was retained by the Rockefellers in 1914, initially to represent Standard Oil, after the bloody repression of the coal mining strike in Colorado known as the Ludlow Massacre.” Both Bernays and Lee were masters at shaping perspective on behalf of corporations and governments, appealing directly to the subconscious mind, often undetectable to the general public. Ambiology will reflect upon the writings and scholarship of people such as Noam Chomsky, who co-authored the book, “the Manufacturing of consent,” Marshall McLuhan who is known as the father of media studies, and most recently Hyrum and Verlan Lewis who wrote the book, “The myth of left and right: how the political spectrum misleads and harms America” #podcast #politics #politicalnews #political #leftrightnews #conservative #liberal #independent #liberaltv #politicalissues #politicaldivide #politicalbias #leftright #leftrightchallenge #politicalanalysis #politicalnews #politicalupdates
