From a Deserted Island to Cedarville UniversityWhat do a deserted island, a rogue ocean wave, a Purdue gym bag, and Cedarville University have in common? For Chris Sohn, they are all part of an extraordinary life story shaped by God’s providence.  In this episode of the Cedarville Stories podcast, Chris Sohn, Chief Financial Officer at Cedarville University, reflects on the experiences that shaped his faith, family, career, and leadership. Chris begins by sharing the joy of becoming a first-time grandfather to Genevieve Grace before taking listeners back to his childhood and his journey to Christ.  Raised in a family without an active Christian faith, Chris first heard the Gospel as a teenager while living in Puerto Rico. Although he recognized his need for a Savior and trusted Christ, he spent years trying to live the Christian life largely on his own. It wasn’t until his early 20s, after moving to California and becoming involved at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, that church, biblical teaching, worship, and fellowship began transforming his understanding of what it meant to follow Christ.  Chris also recounts one of the most dramatic experiences of his life: a fishing trip that turned into a fight for survival after a series of massive waves overturned the boat miles off the coast of Puerto Rico. After swimming to a small sandbar with his father and the body of a fellow passenger who had died, Chris discovered his floating Purdue gym bag containing his keys and wallet — an unexpected provision that helped them return home.  Years later, another unexpected turn led Chris from a successful 16-year career with GE to Cedarville. What began as a job posting and a reluctant application eventually became what Chris describes as a clear work of God. Fourteen years later, he continues to serve Cedarville with a commitment to stewardship, people, and the University’s mission.  Chris discusses Cedarville’s financial strength, conservative approach to budgeting, low debt, and — most importantly — the people whose commitment to Christ drives the University forward. Recently named a Dayton Business Journal CFO of the Year, Chris emphasizes that leadership is about far more than managing finances. From Classroom Idea to FDA-Approved Medical Device  What happens when a student sees a life-threatening problem and refuses to accept that “this is just the way it’s done”?  On this episode of the Cedarville Stories podcast, host Mark Weinstein talks with Dr. Tim Norman, Distinguished Professor of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering, and Dr. Lauren Edmondson, a 2019 Cedarville graduate and physician, about an innovative medical device that began as a student idea in 2018 and has now received FDA approval.  While taking an EMT course at Cedarville, Lauren encountered a story about a traumatic carotid artery injury in which a medic had to hold pressure on a patient’s neck throughout the entire trip to the hospital. The experience sparked a question: Could a device provide the necessary pressure while freeing the medic to care for other patients?  That question became the foundation for the Arterial Restriction Clamp (ARC). Lauren brought the idea to Dr. Norman, who assembled a senior design team of engineering students to develop a solution. The result is a lightweight, multifunctional device designed to address difficult bleeding situations while allowing medical professionals to continue providing care.  In this episode, hear about an allied health student and engineering professor’s collaboration across disciplines, the years of testing and research required to pursue FDA approval, the challenges of securing a patent and funding development, and the team's vision for bringing the device to military medics and other first responders.  More than a medical innovation, the ARC represents the power of interdisciplinary collaboration, student initiative, and problem-solving with a purpose. A Voice of Joy for Listeners Nationwide For Joy Summers, joy is more than a name—it is a thread God has woven through every chapter of her life. Designing with PurposeWhat does designing a safer ski rescue sled have in common with helping recreate first-century Jerusalem? For Cedarville University graduate Luise Schmidt-Krayer, both projects reflect her desire to use design with creativity, care and purpose. Growing up in Gummersbach, Germany, Luise loved adventure—especially skiing. After high school, she took a gap year and attended Lake Ann Camp in the United States with her sister. There, she learned about Cedarville University and made the courageous decision to move far from home to pursue an education in industrial and innovative design. At Cedarville, Luise found an education that shaped both her faith and her future as a designer. For her senior capstone project, she explored the challenges ski patrollers face when transporting injured skiers. After observing patrollers at Snow Trails in Mansfield, Ohio, she designed a lightweight rescue sled featuring a scoop mechanism intended to reduce patient movement and ease the physical strain on rescuers. Today, Luise brings that same thoughtful, research-driven approach to her work at Answers in Genesis. She is on a team that is modeling Jerusalem as it appeared during the life of Jesus, combining historical research, artistic detail and a love for biblical truth. It's More than Peanut Butter for Jesse and Caleb Mangum  When Caleb Mangum lost his job in 2012, he did not set out to build a nut butter company. He simply faced an unexpected turn in the road and took a step of faith, trusting God to provide for his family and lead him forward.   That step became the beginning of Nutty Novelties.  What started as a leap into the unknown slowly grew into a business with purpose. Caleb poured himself into creating a quality product. Together they celebrated thrilling victories, debated coaching decisions, and relived unforgettable moments long after the final whistle. Those traditions nurtured more than a love for sports — they instilled an appreciation for the relationships, teamwork, and stories behind every game. As her interest grew, Emily realized she was drawn less to the final score than to the people who made the moments possible. She wanted to understand what motivated athletes, how coaches built successful cultures, and why certain competitions left lasting impressions. Sports journalism became the perfect way to combine her love of writing, curiosity, and passion for competition with her faith in Jesus. Standing for the Vulnerable Behind courtroom briefs and legal filings are real people whose lives have been devastated by exploitation. Christen Price knows their stories well. As a civil rights attorney with the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, the 2009 Cedarville University graduate has devoted her career to seeking justice for victims and pressing some of the world's largest technology companies to do more to protect the vulnerable. Grounded in a biblical conviction that every person is created in the image of God, Christen has answered a calling to stand beside those whose voices have too often been silenced. Her work is not easy. Day after day, Christen confronts the heartbreaking realities of human trafficking, child sexual abuse material, and the ways technology can be used to exploit the innocent. Yet she has chosen to walk toward the darkness rather than away from it, convinced that every life is worth defending and that justice is an expression of loving her neighbor. Along the way, Christen has helped secure victories that once seemed out of reach. Building More Than Basketball Players Mark Scharnberg, a 1997 Cedarville University graduate, has built successful businesses throughout his career. Today, one of the projects closest to his heart isn't measured by profits; it's measured by the impact on the lives of young athletes. On the Cedarville Stories podcast, Mark describes Iowa United as more than a basketball prep school. He envisions it as a place where gifted young athletes receive the kind of coaching and development that prepares them for the changing world of college basketball. Competing in the EYBL Scholastic league places Iowa United alongside the nation's top programs, giving students an opportunity to hone their skills alongside elite competition. For Mark, however, the scoreboard has never been the whole story. He wants every athlete who joins Iowa United to leave as a stronger player. Even more, he wants each young man to become a person of character who understands what it means to follow Christ. That mission begins with presence. Mark and his wife, Jana, have moved into the Iowa United facility so they can share daily life with the students. They eat meals together, celebrate victories, work through disappointments, and have countless conversations that would never fit into a practice schedule. They open their home, their time, and their lives because they believe lasting influence grows out of genuine relationships. Mark has watched those relationships change young men. Some arrive with remarkable athletic ability but need someone to believe in them. Others need patient guidance as they mature. As trust grows, attitudes begin to change, and confidence takes root. Mark has seen players leave Iowa United ready for high-level college basketball, yet he finds even greater joy when they leave with stronger character and a clearer understanding of faith. A Choice That Became a Legacy When Mark Scharnberg ’97 chose Cedarville University as a high school senior, he had no idea where this decision would take him. Looking back, he sees God's hand at work in ways no one could have planned. Mark recently shared on the Cedarville Stories podcast that Cedarville was the only Christian university he seriously considered. "I can't even tell you why," he admitted with a smile. Yet God often uses ordinary decisions to begin extraordinary stories. As Mark arrived on campus, another story was beginning. Through a connection with then-President Paul Dixon, Cedarville invited Mark's father, Lorne Scharnberg, into conversations about serving on the University's Board of Trustees. A son's college choice opened the door to a relationship that would shape the Scharnberg family and Cedarville University for decades. Mark remembers that his father poured himself into Cedarville more than any other organization. As God prospered the family's businesses, Lorne saw every opportunity as something to steward for the Lord. Supporting Christian higher education became a natural expression of that calling because he believed Cedarville was preparing students to follow Christ wherever He led them. Over time, that conviction became Mark's conviction as well. As he assumed leadership of the family's businesses, Mark wrestled with the responsibility that comes with success. He understood that financial blessings carry both opportunity and temptation. God's gifts are meant to be used faithfully, never trusted more than the Giver Himself. That perspective shaped Mark's own commitment to Cedarville. He chose to invest because he believed in the University's unwavering commitment to God's Word and its mission to disciple students for lives of faithful service. His generosity also reassured his father that the work they had supported together would continue into the future. The Scharnberg family's story offers a picture of how God works through His people. A 2009 mechanical engineering graduate of Cedarville University, Toby has built a career helping people harness the power and potential of the sea. From sustainable energy to aquaculture, his work sits at the heart of what many call the “blue economy” — using ocean resources responsibly to meet some of humanity’s greatest needs. Toby’s journey began in an unexpected place. As a Cedarville student, he joined the University’s solar boat team and discovered the fascinating challenge of designing structures that interact with waves, currents, and wind. The experience sparked a curiosity that eventually carried him to graduate school and a career in ocean engineering.
