US Army retired Sergeant Major Roy Lewis achieved the pinnacle of military rank in his 36 years of military service. Over 170 years ago, a white slave owner's brother contested the Will that set Lucy and her descendants free from slavery. She fought him in court and won. Today, her great great great great grandson, Terrence Franklin, is an award winning Wills and Trusts litigation attorneys. Marcus Higgs is a communication coach for business professionals who are parenting preteens. He helps parents effectively show up and connect with their 10- to 14-years-olds during these key formative years, allowing them to secure a relationship that lasts beyond a lifetime.  Our conversation covers the importance of language, communication skills and the importance of authoring and owning the stories we tell ourselves and the stories we cultivate. Dr. Fitzroy Dawkins is a Medical Oncologist with over 30 years of experience teaching at Howard University College of Medicine. Throughout his career, he's conducted research in oncology and advocated for clinical trials as a biotech executive. His book Fighting For Survival: Conquering Cancer And The African American Patient provides a roadmap for improving treatment outcomes for African-Americans, particularly related to cancers. He squarely addresses the historical and cultural hesitancy to participate in clinical trials, while exploring the impact this has on treatment options. From the fears and anxieties to the guilt and the denial often accompanied with treating cancer, Dr. Dawkins offers hope and actions to lessen the gap in cancer survival rates specifically, and health-care outcomes generally. In the four year's since George Floyd's murder we've seen some progress in how policing is done in the United States. The issues underlying the disparate treatment of Black men by police are complex and entrenched. This episode is a newly edited reworking of prior episodes that focused on various guests responses to questions related to experiences with law enforcement. Many brothers have shared positive stories. They are not all negative just as all police are not racist. However the stories compiled in this episode are meant to shine a light on the excessive pattern of stopping Black men. There are two positive stories at the end. Rickard Jean-Noel is a Fordham University trained Social Worker. He is dedicated to providing social and emotional support services to diverse communities throughout the greater New York City area. His psychotherapeutic work has been mainly with adolescents and young adults, particularly those in minority communities suffering with anxiety, depression, PTSD and the impact of various types of abuse, as well as those struggling with substance use disorders. He is also keenly interested in helping those who have long carried the intersectional psychological burdens of systemic racism, classism, xenophobia, genderism and homophobia, as well as other forms of othering and marginalization. He has been a Clinical Director at a NYC Homeless Shelter and he has worked with HomeBase and their homelessness prevention program. Sherman Perryman is an entrepreneur, lifestyle coach and author. His studies at Morehouse College and the USC Ross program in real estate laid the foundation for his ambitions, blending real world savvy with scholarly insight. A former naval officer, Marvin Dunn is a Professor Emeritus, Department of Psychology at Florida International University, retiring as chairperson of the department in 2006. He has published numerous articles in leading newspapers on race and ethnic relations including the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Orlando Sentinel and the Miami Herald. He is the author of the following books: The History of Florida: Through Black Eyes, CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform (2016), Black Miami in the Twentieth Century, University Press of Florida (1997).  He is the coauthor of This Land is Our Land, California:  University of California Press. (2003) and The Miami Riot of 1980: Crossing the Bounds, Lexington, Massachusetts: D.C. Heath (1984). He has  produced three documentary films including, "Rosewood Uncovered," documenting the Rosewood Massacre of 1923, "Murder on the Suwanee: The Willie James Howard Story," and "Black Seminoles in the Bahamas: The Red Bays story" which documents the flight of slaves from Florida escaping to the Bahama Islands in the 1800s. In the wake of the killing of George Floyd, Dunn and other community advocates for racial justice founded the Miami Center for Racial Justice. According to Dunn, " The Miami Center for Racial Justice will be a beacon in our community. We seek to foster a safe space for dialogue on racial issues, to promote unity, and allow for frank confrontation of the history of racial terror through the examination and preservation of stories of racial terror in Florida."
