When We Can't See the Stars | Throw Forward Thursday 188
2026/08/13
For thousands of years, every generation has looked up at the same night sky. The same stars our ancestors used to navigate oceans, mark seasons, and tell their stories. We might be the last generation who sees them clearly. In August 2026, an abandoned 4-ton SpaceX booster crashed into the Moon. The 11th human-made object we know of to hit it since the 1990s. Nobody planned it. Space junk has to go somewhere. Right now there are thousands of satellites in orbit. Soon there will be hundreds of thousands, then millions, most of them up there so a few more people get better Wi-Fi. Three things follow from that, and all three are already starting: Debris falls back to Earth, and some of it survives the atmosphere and lands on people and property. Working satellites, the ones running GPS, communications, and one day carrying astronauts, get taken out by the junk drifting around them. And the night sky fills with so much moving light that our children and grandchildren might look up and see only satellites where the constellations used to be. We treated our rivers and oceans as somewhere to dump things until the mess was too big to fix. We're about to do the same to the sky above our heads. The time to write the rules on liability and clean-up is now, while it's still a problem we're able to solve. This week's Throw Forward Thursday is about what we lose if we look away, and what we protect if we act. What would you tell a child who asks why the sky is full of satellites and empty of stars? Smartphones predict earthquakes - Tour Guide to the Future Ep 116
2026/06/30
Here's something that should make you look at your smartphone differently. It might help save your life in an earthquake. Not because it can predict the future. But because the tiny accelerometer inside your phone can detect movement. The same technology that notices if someone has fallen can also spot the first micro-tremors of an earthquake. Same phone. Same pocket. Different purpose. That's what this week's Tour Guide to the Future is all about: why the best technology is not the cleverest technology, but the technology that gives us real-world benefits when it matters most. Should We Use AI for Medical Advice? It's Complicated - ThrowForward Thursday 187
2026/05/07
Here's something that should make you think twice before asking ChatGPT about that headache. Oxford University ran a study earlier this year. They gave the same medical scenarios to AI chatbots, twice. First with 100 doctors at the keyboard. Then with 1,300 ordinary people. The doctors got 95% accuracy. The ordinary people got 34%. Same AI. Same scenarios. Different humans. Why the gap? And what does it tell us about how the rest of us should be using AI at work? That's what this week's ThrowForward Thursday is all about. I get into the Dunning-Kruger problem with large language models, and why AI in the hands of a non-expert can be a liability rather than a tool. I also introduce the 5T AI Impact Model, our team at TomorrowToday Global uses to help organisations get past the productivity hype and into the workflow redesign where AI starts to pay for itself. $80 billion. Gone - ThrowForward Thursday 186
2026/04/16
Meta lost $80 billion on the Metaverse. We called it in 2022. Here's why the same mistake is happening again - right now. In this week's ThrowForward Thursday, I revisit our April 2022 episode on the Metaverse hype cycle and what it teaches us about separating real technological change from expensive noise. With AI, spatial computing, and the "next big platform" dominating headlines, the ability to distinguish signal from hype is the most valuable skill a leader can have. What you'll learn: - Why the Metaverse failed - and what the warning signs actually were - How to identify genuine technological disruption vs. hype-driven investment - The thinking framework futurists use to stress-test tech trends - What today's equivalent of the Metaverse might be 🎯 WATCH NEXT Throwforward Thursday 48: The Metaverse (full version): https://tinyurl.com/tftepisode48  📚 RESOURCES MENTIONED TomorrowToday Global: https://tomorrowtodayglobal.com/  Book Graeme to speak: https://graemecodrington.com/speaking/  🔔 SUBSCRIBE for weekly ThrowForward Thursday episodes - every week, a look at the future of work, technology, and leadership. 📩 Join the newsletter: https://tomorrowtodayglobal.com/newsletter/  💼 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/graemecodrington/  What do you think is today's Metaverse?
What if... we banned phones in restaurants (like we banned smoking) - ThrowForward Thursday 185
2026/04/02
In the 1980s and 90s, people smoked in restaurants while the rest of us were eating. Then we made a change. We literally changed a global culture, made new rules, and people (fairly) quickly changed their habits. We could do that again in public spaces - banning phones. Why not?
Why everyone wants a piece of Greenland - ThrowForward Thursday 184
2026/03/12
I think I know why Donald Trump wants Greenland. But why does everyone else see it as strategically important? It's not what you think. But it will change the world. Listen to this week's episode to find out more.
What it means to be human in an age of Robots - ThrowForward Thursday 183
2026/02/26
If robots can be developed to run ultra trail marathons and compete in sporting events, then why should humans even bother anymore? Maybe it's less about being better than someone else, and more about finding out where one's own limits are. Maybe that's the essence of being human. In this episode of ThrowForward Thursday we ask how advanced humanoid robots are rewiring not just our view of automation and technology, but also our view of ourselves. Also, as a bonus... keep an eye on my progress towards running one of the world's toughest trail marathons, the Otter Challenge in October 2026.
The Enhanced Games - ThrowForward Thursday 182
2026/02/19
Faster, higher, stronger - the Olympic motto that inspires the best athletes to push themselves to the limit. But what if we changed where those limits are? What if we allowed humans to not just rely on good genetics and intensive training, but also on chemical, medical and biomechanical enhancements? The team at The Enhanced Games are aiming to answer this question in a few weeks time in Las Vegas - see http://www.enhanced.com for details. Is this the future of sport? Or are we crossing a line we should not cross?  Maybe a more important question is what sorts of human enhancements might be valuable and useful in your life and work? And are there any legal and ethical limits you should be considering?
MEET MY DIGITAL TWIN: ThrowForward Thursday 181
2025/12/04
Our team at TomorrowToday have developed my digital twin: a ChatGPT agent that contains all of our books, white papers, blogs and videos from the last twenty years of work. You can now access this GPT agent for free (as long as you have a ChatGPT account), and ask questions about the future, thinking like a futurist, foresight, leadership, and innovation. It's available at http://www.graemecodrington.com/askGraeme    And if you and your team are impressed by what a GenAI version of my past work can do, then contact the real, human me and set up a time to chat about how our team can really add value to your work in the future.
ThrowForward Thursday 180: What if our Medicines Stop Working?
2025/10/30
In Season 6 of ThrowForward Thursday, we are revisiting some of our previous predictions and finding out what's happening in the world right now. This one is scary.  In Episode 66 (see https://youtu.be/V-b-U2Zf4V4 ) we talked about the end of antibiotics. Just this past month, in October 2025, the World Health Organization released a research report on antibiotic and AMR resistance, and it's getting worse and worse (see: https://www.who.int/news/item/13-10-2025-who-warns-of-widespread-resistance-to-common-antibiotics-worldwide ).  We need to urgently use fewer antibiotics, giving science a chance to keep up with the mutations of the diseases we are fighting. We need to think not just about "quick fixes" for our own illnesses, but more societally and systemically about healthcare.
ThrowForward Thursday 179: Cape Town Marathon Cancelled
2025/10/23
Sport can't fight weather The 2025 edition of the Cape Town Marathon was cancelled due to strong winds making the course unsafe. It's not the first major sporting event to be affected by weather; and it won't be the last.  Back in 2020, I was due to run the London Marathon. It was cancelled due to Covid, and we were encouraged to run a 42.2km distance in the 24 hours of the day of the marathon to earn our finisher's medal. I did that in the Covid-emptied streets of Johannesburg.  We've talked about this before in ThrowForward Thursday: Ep 11: Climate change am-dram moment - https://youtu.be/J6QurefheZo  Ep 42: Olympics and climate change - https://youtu.be/pgl9UMFPcd4  Organisers of major sporting events will need to plan for weather related disruptions - not as Plan B or C, but as an expected Plan A.  This is what our team at TomorrowToday calls an 'Elephant in the Boardroom' - a known, high impact issue that people are not yet taking seriously enough. The cancellation of a major marathon, impacting tens of thousands of people, is a reminder that this is our new normal.
ThrowForward Thursday 178: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Post Truth World
2025/10/16
What if the truth could be edited? In a world of AI deepfakes, fake news, and manipulated media, how do we know what's real anymore? Blend science fiction and foresight in this mind-bending episode of ThrowForward Thursday, inspired by The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Douglas Adams' classic story predicted today's world - crowdsourced "truths," social networks, and reality distortion fields long before they existed. In this episode, Graeme unpacks what The Hitchhiker's Guide can teach us about: - AI-generated misinformation and deepfakes - The manipulation of truth in media and politics - Why scepticism and curiosity are leadership superpowers - How to lead with clarity when facts are contested If you're a leader, educator, or curious thinker trying to make sense of our post-truth world, this one's for you. What You'll Learn - How Douglas Adams foresaw our information-saturated future - The connection between AI, social media, and "reality distortion fields" - Ways to stay sceptical without losing trust or hope - How to build credibility and clarity in confusing times - Why humour, humility, and courage matter in leadership today Connect with Graeme Codrington: Website: www.graemecodrington.com  Email: [email protected]  LinkedIn: http://uk.linkedin.com/in/graemecodrington  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/graemecodrington  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/graeme.codrington  TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@graemecodrington  Watch more ThrowForward Thursday episodes: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLH4yciXjrr9qKpj_vNxr5kHW79jLI7rXF&si=kZJP-jOURAFjWrhN   Listen to the Elephants in the Boardroom podcast here: https://www.tomorrowtoday.consulting/podcast  Book Graeme -  Looking for a keynote or workshop that helps your leaders thrive in disruption? email: [email protected]
ThrowForward Thursday 177: Dealing with a Post-Truth World
2025/10/09
In a world filled with AI slop, fake news, photoshopped photos and AI generated videos, how do we work out what is true, what is real, and what is not? In this week's ThrowForward Thursday episode, we look at six ways we can respond to a post-truth world.
ThrowForward Thursday 176: Deep Fakes Revisited
2025/10/02
Deep fakes have been around for a while - in fact, way back in 2020, I was one of the first people I knew to feature in a deep fake video (it wasn't very good, but it was a sign of things to come). The era of fake videos has arrived much faster than we thought we would. It's here, right now. We need to learn how to navigate a world in which we cannot trust what we hear, read or see. It's sad, but it's the reality (or is it real at all?). This week, we revisit some of our predictions about the future of deep fakes and fake news and show you what's happening right now. Watch these three episodes from our archives: Episode 4: Deep Fakes: https://youtu.be/vs8SAdD1KXs Episode 94: AI generated news: https://youtu.be/W0TGnyB5EgE Episode 122: Digital copies of ourselves: https://youtu.be/6ITWYpC4Fho Join us next week to find out six things we can do about it, and how we can live successfully in a post-truth world.
