We've seen the emergence of the Special Purpose Acquisition Corporation (SPAC) and it’s growing relevance to the crypto sector.  Core Scientific, Circle, Bullish, Cipher Mining, and Bakkt have all announced, SPAC mergers (although not yet closed). Celsius Networks was the notable acquirer of the week, acquiring the group that developed their mobile app. Today, Celsius has over $15 billion in deposited assets (up from $5 billion at the beginning of 2021) and has facilitated a total of $8 billion in loans. Last week crypto asset based payments were high on our mind with the acquisition of Simplex by Nuvei (our AP M&A Alert here). We expressed some reservations as to whether crypto and consumer payments are ready for each other. However, let’s talk fees. PayPal claims either “low” or no transaction fees to use crypto. However, the reality is quite different.
