Well, friends, tomorrow I turn 40. I’m not ready. My wife and I are leaving our son with his grandparents for a week (this is a really big deal and I am really nervous and we will both miss him so much) to go to the Azores- one of Hayley’s best friends from college is getting married in Ponta Delgada, so the timing is perfect for a nice trip. I had to make sure to get this episode out before we travel. Now, about the episode: This one is a bit shorter, the whole episode is only about 15 minutes, which I think is a record shortest podcast episode for me.That’s not to say this episode is lacking in any way. Shelby is just starting out in her music career, having just released her first single about 18 months ago, but she’s well on her way to defining her voice as a songwriter. We met at the end of a long day of marathon recording sessions while the Holy Mountain team was getting ready for the show. Shelby is a bright personality with a lot of talent. Her live set was excellent, both on the podcast and as the evening’s first act for the Holy Mountain event back in March. That also happened to be the day her song “Devil in Jeans” was released into the wild. Shelby also recently released a new single: “Dust Off,” and I really dig this one. Follow Shelby McHugh on Instagram. Music Recommendations: * I have been listening to Phoebe Bridgers Lost Weekend repeatedly since it came out. This is a perfect record. * I also revisited an old favorite of mine. Super tragic story connected to this band/album. But it’s such a beautiful album. The Midnight Organ Fight by Frightened Rabbit. With music festival season beginning its wind-down, I wanted to share this conversation I had about a year ago with an expert on the subject of music festivals, John J. Thompson.John is a professor of Music and the Director of Music Industry Studies at Lipscomb University in Nashville, TN, as well as an author, speaker, musician- he wears a lot of hats. I was asked to help create the Holy Mountain Sessions for my friends at Holy Mountain, and I had an opportunity to sit down to talk with everyone who played at that first event in August of 2025 (and I am slowly but surely getting all of those podcast episodes edited). While John wasn’t performing with his wife in their band The Wayside, he did give a talk about the cultural importance of festivals (which I will drop in this feed soon). In this conversation, we talk about his history and love for music, his deep connection to the now-defunct Cornerstone Festival, and the importance of boredom. Music Recommendations: * I’m only making one single song recommendation on this post, “Sweet Marianne” by John J Thompson/The Wayside ft. Phil Keaggy This song was written for John’s novel, The Ballad of the Lost Dogs of East Nashville. I’ve listened to the audiobook. It’s great. Go check it out. Build a Community with Me! Cody writes about his faith, exploring common struggles like anxiety and self-worth. He and his wife work closely with their church youth groups and use collaborative songwriting as a way of deepening understanding of concepts and building connection with others. He was part of a 3 artist bill Holy Mountain put together at Hope Church in East Nashville back in March, and we had an opportunity to sit down and record this session. He’s a kind-hearted person and a talented vocalist! Enjoy the session. Connect with Cody Website | Instagram Music Recommendations: * Ghost of Vroom 3 - Mike Doughty, Ghost of Vroom My Mike Doughty Kick continues, probably forever. This is great nighttime driving music. * Pool Kids - Pool Kids Fun Fact: I had Pool Kids on the Hoodoo Music Podcast waaay back when before their first album, Music to Practice Safe Sex to, and the “pop goes the weasel” clip on that album is from that podcast episode. Note: Before I jump into this, there are two orders of business: * If you like what you see and hear in the podcast, let me know, and maybe invite a friend to check it out by forwarding the post to them! There are all kinds of fancy buttons down at the bottom of the page. * Happy Birthday to my baby brother. He’s 34 today. It has been a minute. Or like 2 years. Something like that, a long time. There have been many failures to (re)launch because I tend to bite off more than I can chew. Back when the show was audio only… and I was single and not a dad and had 3 day weekends every weekend (not that I would trade my family for anything; sure, I had more free time, but I was also lonely and weird and gross {so, so gross} ) I could crank out an episode every two weeks. Now I am shooting for a respectable “once per month if I get a 4 month head start, and maybe one or two more here and there if I’m feelin’ froggy.”Also I’m trying this bit where I write a newsletter that goes out with the episode for a personal touch. I’m working on some Substack exclusive content down the road that will be behind a paywall, but more on that at a later date. If you have a friend that might like this kind of thing, forward it on to them and tell them how they can subscribe. For now, here’s the info on this episode:I met Jordan back in March while helping my friends at Holy Mountain in East Nashville. He was playing their first ticketed event- a 3 artist bill with Cody Towell and Shelby McHugh (also, can you guess who the next two episode artists are?). I was able to set up a podcast room at the venue and record a few live sessions. As an aside, I really like what Holy Mountain is doing. Check them out. Jordan has grown up in and around music, spending his adult life on the road as a vocalist. He is venturing into the country-rock side of things these days. Check out this session to hear his music and his story. He’s a sweet dude. Thanks for reading this. I really don’t know what I’m doing, but I’m trying! Connect with Jordan JordanDaneJohnson.com | Instagram Music Recommendations: * I’m currently listening to An Always Open Door by Endearments, an NYC band with a very dreamy pop sound. * One of my favorite records so far this year has been My Life is a Small Protest by Real Face. * I have been very much enjoying the new Legit Smitty record, This Living Ain’t That Hard, but it is only available as a vinyl LP for a few more months. It will be streaming eventually, but for now there’s physical media and a digital download. Build Community Share this with some friends on socialist media, comrades. Hey! Let’s get to know Rae, AKA Deltalys. Their music is haunting- perfect for the spooky season in which we currently find ourselves.
