Listen in for a review of the ACCORD BP trial, another episode in our series of podcasts devoted to discussing the landmark trials that have informed care and guidelines for the care of patients with hypertension. The ACCORD (Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes) BP trial explored whether intensive BP control (120 mmHg) reduced rates of nonfatal MI, nonfatal stroke or CV mortality when compared with standard (140 mmHg) blood pressure targets. Spoiler alert: it's complicated!!

We welcome a special invited guest, Dr. Phillip Levy of Wayne State University, to describe how he and his team turned mobile health units into a valuable tool to address hypertension in vulnerable communities in Detroit, Michigan during the covid pandemic. 

Join us as we hear from expert Dr. Ruth-Alma Turkson-Ocran about the disparities in cardiovascular care between white and non-white patients, define social determinants of health and learn about the importance of shared decision making in our clinical practices.

In our first segment we discuss home blood pressure monitors, including how to chose them and how to use them. For our second segment, we review the SSaSS trial which evaluated the  impact of using a salt substitute instead of salt among patients with prior stroke.

During our literature review segment, another one of our stellar primary care track residents reviews the findings of the ALLHAT trial.  Then, we are joined by our clinical pharmacist who gives an overview of the major thiazide diuretics we use for hypertension treatment (chlorthalidone, indapamide and hydrochlorothiazide).

For our clinical case, we discuss the clinical course and treatment options for postpartum hypertension as well as the long term cardiovascular risk implications for women who have this. During our literature review segment, one of our stellar primary care track residents takes us through important aspects of the landmark 2015 SPRINT trial.

For our clinical case, we discuss the impact that antihypertensive medications can have on Raynaud’s phenomenon. We then explore the impact of sodium reduction on blood pressure control and cardiovascular outcomes by reviewing a meta-analysis of 85 clinical trials.
