Narrated by composer and singer Leci Brandrão, the Women in Football Audio Guide brings stories of 100 years of women participation in the most popular sport in Brazil - a journey filled with resistance and fight, even facing a decree that prohibited the discipline for almost 40 years. The Audio Guide can be used while visiting the Football Museum, providing insights on the women in each room, and may also be heard as a podcast, for free, from anywhere in the world.

The first episode of the Women in Football Audio Guide talks a little bit about us, the Football Museum. The Museum, which is under the bleachers of the Pacaembu Stadium, brings a lot of memories about the discipline. However, most of these memories are related to men’s football. Where is the football played by women? We start telling this story here!

The second episode of the audio guide talks about the Museum’s Penalty Area room. From the floor to the ceiling, you will find several pieces that tell the history of football: jerseys, mascots, banners, mugs, pins, tickets of old matches...a lot of stuff. For a long time, almost everything in this room was about men’s football. However, with a lot of research, elements that tell the story of women in the sport have been included in the Museum’s collection. The history of many male and female football players begins the same way: bare feet, in the street, with improvised goal posts and ball. They say that is where our talent comes from... Girls are not always encouraged to play football from an early age. Some get dolls as gifts, while the boys get footballs. But, nevertheless, they persist. That is perfectly obvious to anyone who does not close their eyes. This episode us about the visibility gained by women in the football world!

The Baroque Angels room displays images of mythical characters of the football world; those who enter the playing field and seem to craft art. The combination of light, sound, and projections create an almost divine environment to celebrate 29 athletes. Four of them are women: Marta, Cristiane, Formiga, and Sissi. This episode tells us a little bit about their journeys!

The Museum’s Goals and Radio room is dedicated to media vehicles. They are part of football history. This is the part of the press that tells the fans everything that happens inside and outside the playing field. Well, this was another sector that kept women out for a long time. This episode talks about women who covered football for radio and press as a whole.

The crowd! It drives the team. The Exaltation room tries to reproduce this environment. The rumble is deafening; as if you were right in the middle of an organized fan club (“torcida organizada” in Portuguese). Now, tell me: have you ever wondered about the origin of the word “torcida”? Indeed: a lot of people tried to prohibit women from playing football. But they were always brave and bold, in Brazil and all around the world. The Origins room tells a little bit of this story and is the subject of this episode.

It tells the stories of two women who were very important in Brazilian football: Margarida Pereira and Dona Carlota.

In the Football Museum exhibit, the Rite of Passage room represents one of the saddest defeats in our history: the “Maracanazo”. In 1950, the men’s national team lost the World Cup final to Uruguay in the brand new and absolutely packed Maracanã. But this rooms tell the story of another rite of passage, which did not last only one day and that also left very deep scars in Brazilian sport, society, and culture: the four decades of prohibition of women’s football.

One of the rooms in the Museum is dedicated to the main football championship: the World Cup. The focus is on the men’s national team. They played their first World Cup in 1930. And, while the Brazilians were three-time world champions, in 1970, women were not even allowed to play official matches. The tenth episode of the audio guide talks about our overdue women’s national team.

There is no duo like Pelé and Garrincha! Just like there is no due like Marta and Formiga. In the Football Museum, the Pelé & Garrincha room is entirely dedicated to them, but in this audio guide our homage is only for the girls!
