Alive... But Actually Dead? (Ezekiel 37 Follow-Up)
2026/06/15
Why does it feel like everyone is alive, but so few people actually are? In this episode of HC Conversations, Phil and Paul dig deeper into Sunday's message on Ezekiel 37 (the valley of dry bones) and Ephesians 2, unpacking the difference between looking spiritually alive and actually being spiritually alive. They talk through Ezekiel's strange prophetic acts, the church in Sardis from Revelation 3 (a church with a reputation for being alive but was actually dead), and why hype, busyness, and church activity don't equal spiritual health. They also tackle the cultural moment: the hopelessness epidemic, the rise in deaths of despair, and why decades of "you're enough, believe in yourself" messaging hasn't worked, and what the gospel actually offers instead. If you've ever wondered what real spiritual life looks like, or why so much self-help language sounds Christian but isn't, this conversation is for you.HC Conversations is a podcast from Hope Community Church in Minerva, Ohio. You Can't Read Jeremiah 29:11 Like That
2026/06/08
Jeremiah 29:11 is one of the most quoted verses in the Bible -- and one of the most misunderstood. This week Phil and Paul are joined by elder Scott, who preached this past Sunday, to unpack what God's famous promise actually meant to people living in exile in Babylon -- and what it means for us today.
They get into why skipping the Old Testament gives you a smaller gospel, what "shalom" actually means in Jeremiah's promise, the danger of false voices telling you what you want to hear, and what it looks like to live in your baptized self when shame comes knocking.
Topics covered:
- What you miss when you skip the Old Testament
- The real context of Jeremiah 29:11 (it's not a prosperity promise)
- False prophets then and the self-help gospel now
- Repentance, responsibility, and why blame culture leaves people powerless
- Living in your baptized self -- and why the church makes that possible

700-Year-Old Prophecy, Missing Bible Verses, and Why Baptism Isn't Optional
2026/06/02
In this week's HC Conversations, Phil and Paul go deeper on Sunday's Isaiah 53 message — covering the archaeological discovery that silenced the skeptics, why a growing movement is quietly removing the cross from Christianity, what sin actually is in a culture that's abandoned the concept, and why the Ethiopian eunuch stopped his chariot and got in the water the same day he heard the gospel.Topics covered:- The Dead Sea Scrolls and why they matter for anyone who doubts the Bible- Progressive Christianity — what it is, why it's appealing, and why it's dangerous- Acts 8:37 — the verse that's missing from most Bibles and what it teaches us about how we got Scripture- Baptism — it doesn't save you, but that doesn't mean it's optionalThis is the kind of conversation that doesn't fit in a 35-minute sermon. From Eden to Babylon: Why We Are Still in Exile Today
2026/05/18
Do you ever feel like the world is shaking beneath your feet?
In this episode of the HC Conversations podcast, Phil and Paul dive into one of the most massive yet misunderstood themes in the Bible: The Exile. Many of us know the Sunday School stories of Genesis and Exodus, but there is a "gap" in our understanding that makes the New Testament feel disconnected.
We explore how the Babylonian Exile wasn't just a historical event—it's a spiritual archetype that shapes everything from the ministry of Jesus to the book of Revelation. If you've ever felt like a "foreigner" in today’s culture, this conversation is for you.
In this episode, we discuss:
The "Gap" in Biblical Knowledge: Why most Christians stop after David and Goliath. God Moving East: The beautiful imagery of God’s presence leaving the Temple to find His people in their mess. The Problem with "Nostalgia": Why we can't just "go back to the good old days" to find security.Exile vs. Retreat: Why being in "exile" doesn't mean checking out, but rather engaging culture as salt and light. The Truth About Jeremiah 29:11: The real context of "plans to prosper you" spoken into a 70-year captivity. Whether you are navigating "institutional collapse" or just trying to understand the prophets, learn how to find flourishing and God’s presence right where you are.HC Conversations is a podcast from Hope Community Church in Minerva, Ohio. The God's That Can't Hear You
2026/05/11
What do you do when you've been calling out for hope, for purpose, for something to make sense — and nothing answers?
Three thousand years ago, a prophet named Elijah stood on a mountain and asked Israel a simple question: How long are you going to limp along between two opinions? Their answer was silence. And it turns out, so were their gods.
In this episode of HC Conversations, Phil and Paul dig into one of the most dramatic moments in the Old Testament — Elijah's showdown with the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel — and why it might be the most relevant story for where we are right now.
They talk about:
Why passion and loudness don't equal truthWhat the Bible actually says about the spiritual reality behind false godsThe difference between calling out bad ideas and being mean to peopleWhy the prophets of the Old Testament refuse to make anyone comfortableAnd what it looks like when you've been calling out to things that were never going to answerHC Conversations is a podcast from Hope Community Church in Minerva, Ohio. You're Not David. Here's Who Is.
2026/05/04
Is the story of David and Goliath really about you slaying your "personal giants"?
In this episode of the HC Conversations podcast, Paul and Phil dive into the life of David as found in 1st and 2nd Samuel. While many of us grew up with the "Sunday School" version of these stories, we often miss the bigger picture: the Bible is one unified story that leads directly to Jesus.
In this conversation, we discuss:
The Three Offices: How Jesus perfectly fulfills the distinct Old Testament roles of Prophet, Priest, and King. The Problem with "Slaying Your Giants": Why making yourself the hero of the David and Goliath story can lead to a "prosperity gospel" mindset and a misunderstanding of the real enemy. The "Snakey" Details: Exploring the imagery of Goliath’s armor and how it connects back to the serpent in Genesis 3. David and Bathsheba: How the man we thought was the "snake crusher" was ultimately conquered by sin, pointing to our need for a better King. The Eternal Promise: Unpacking God's covenant with David in 2nd Samuel 7 and how it finds its ultimate fulfillment in Christ.
Stop looking for yourself in the story and start looking for the God who has already won the battle. HC Conversations is a podcast from Hope Community Church in Minerva, Ohio. New episodes follow our weekend messages as we journey through the Bible together. Visit us at hcminerva.church.
What is a Disciple? Following Jesus in a Divided World
2026/04/27
Can you have unity without agreeing on everything? In this episode of HC Conversations, Phil and Paul recap a whirlwind weekend that included a last-minute sermon pivot due to a fever, a trip to the historic Cane Ridge revival site, and deep insights from the RENEW National Gathering.
The guys dive into the heart of Hope Community’s mission: making disciples of Jesus who are transformed by truth, sent on mission, and live in unity. They break down what it actually means to be a disciple using the "Three-Fold Definition" from Matthew 4:19—following, being transformed, and joining the mission.
In this episode, we discuss:
Plurality of Elders: Why having a team of leaders is God’s design for the church. The Three Buckets of Theology: How to distinguish between "Hills to Die On" (essentials like the Resurrection), "Hills to Get Bloodied Over" (important issues like baptism or gender), and "Personal Items" (third-tier disagreements like the age of the earth).Discipleship vs. Mercy Ministry: Why feeding the hungry is what disciples do, but isn't a substitute for making disciples. The History of the Restoration Movement: Highlights from their visit to Cane Ridge, Kentucky. HC Conversations is a podcast from Hope Community Church in Minerva, Ohio. Israel, Joshua, and the Conquest: More Complicated Than You Think
2026/04/13
When the Bible talks about Israel — and when the news talks about Israel — are they talking about the same thing? In this episode, Phil and Paul unpack the difference between ancient Israel and the modern nation-state, why conflating the two leads to bad theology, and what Christians should actually do with the conquest passages in Joshua. Plus: a closer look at the violence in those texts, what scholars say about the warfare language, and why God's judgment on the Canaanites is more defensible than critics often make it sound.HC Conversations is a podcast from Hope Community Church in Minerva, Ohio. 2026/03/30
Phil and Paul follow up Sunday's message on Deuteronomy 6 with everything that didn't make it into the sermon — and a few things that deserve a little more room to breathe.
In this episode:

Wilderness, False Leaders & the Fear of God
2026/03/23
Paul and Phil dig into Numbers 14 — the moment Israel stood at the edge of the Promised Land and turned back. What does it mean to be delivered but still wander in a wilderness of your own making? And what does that have to do with us today?
In this episode:
Why God's goal was never just to save Israel from Egypt — and why the same is true for us.The difference between the test of obedience and the test of the wildernessWhat godly leadership looks like — and what to watch out for when people want leaders who just tell them what they want to hearFear of God vs. fear of man: you can't have bothJesus as the true Israel who passed the wilderness test on our behalf. We're working through the entire Bible this year as a church. The Passover, Spiritual Warfare & What Jesus Really Defeated
2026/03/02
Paul and Phil dive into Exodus 12 and the Passover — not just as a foreshadowing of Christ, but as a cosmic confrontation with the powers of darkness. The plagues weren't just against Pharaoh. God declared he would execute judgment against the gods of Egypt. That changes everything about how we read the story.
They trace this theme into the New Testament: why the rulers of darkness didn't understand what the cross would accomplish (1 Corinthians 2), how Jesus publicly humiliated the powers and principalities (Colossians 2), and why the Christian life is fundamentally a spiritual battle — one we can't fight alone. Worship, preaching, and gathering together aren't optional extras. They're armor.
Note: Recording was cut short due to a storage issue — this episode ends mid-way through a reading of Romans 6. Hope Community Church, Minerva, Ohio.
