Ep. 135: How to Move Forward When You Don't Have a Map
2026/10/19
What do you do when you know you want something more, but you have absolutely no idea how to get there? For successful professionals, one of the hardest parts of starting something new is suddenly finding ourselves in unfamiliar territory. We're used to being competent, prepared, and knowing what comes next. But when you're changing careers, building a business, writing a book, or pursuing a long-held ambition, there may not be a clear roadmap to follow. And that's okay. In Episode 135 of Tales from The Lane, we're exploring how to make meaningful progress when you don't have all the answers, and why your willingness to adapt may be one of your greatest strengths. I'll share why studying other people's success stories is useful but insufficient, how to find the right people to support your journey, and why taking one thoughtful step at a time can be more effective than trying to plan the entire future. You'll also hear about a coaching client who changed her writing goal from completing two chapters to reaching a word count, and why that adjustment represented better judgment rather than less ambition. In this episode: Why high achievers find it so uncomfortable to become beginners again How to learn from other people's experiences without blindly following their methods The three kinds of people who can help you navigate unfamiliar territory Why your first plan should be treated as a hypothesis How to take small, meaningful steps that create useful information Why experiments can be more valuable than enormous commitments How to distinguish thoughtful course corrections from avoiding difficult work Why changing your goal can be a sign of growth How to develop confidence in your ability to figure things out This week's challenge: Identify something you've been putting off because you don't know how to begin. Then ask yourself: What direction do I want to explore? What's one step I can take in the next seven days? And who could help me learn from it? You don't need to have the whole map. You need to be willing to take the next step. Episode 134: Why Growth Sometimes Requires Taking a Step Back
2026/10/12
Are you so busy maintaining your current life that you have no time to build the next one? There's a big difference between being busy and building. And for successful professionals, freelancers, and entrepreneurs, confusing the two can keep us stuck for years. In this episode of Tales from The Lane, I'm sharing a conversation with a freelancer whose calendar was packed with low-paying, unfulfilling work. He had an exciting idea for a new offer that could significantly increase his income and give him more freedom, but he couldn't find the time to develop it. Sound familiar? Sometimes, creating your next level of success means temporarily doing less, earning less, turning down opportunities, or investing money before you see a return. From the outside, it can look like you're moving backward. But you may actually be creating the runway for your next big move. We'll explore why busyness feels so rewarding, how scarcity fears keep us saying yes to work we've outgrown, and how to create the financial and emotional breathing room to build something better. In this episode: Why being busy and making progress aren't always the same thing How low-paying work and endless obligations can keep you stuck The difference between genuine financial scarcity and scarcity-driven decisions Why growth sometimes requires a temporary contraction How to identify the work, commitments, and affiliations you've outgrown Practical financial strategies for funding a career or business transition Why protecting your newly freed time is essential How to navigate the uncomfortable period between investment and return The identity shift from being needed and productive to becoming a builder This week's question: Am I too busy maintaining my current life to build the next one? Because sometimes the most ambitious move you can make is to remove something from your calendar. You're creating the runway. And you can't take off without one. 📚 Get my book Beyond Potential 🎯 Interested in a 90-minute Strategy Session? Episode 133: What Really Happens When You Reach a Big Goal
2026/10/05
The Creators Leadership Mastermind, my 9-month guided mastermind group for people ready to finally move a meaningful goal from idea to reality, is open for enrollment through October 11th. If you're ready to find out what completing your big thing could set in motion, book a call with me today to get the conversation started.  We spend an enormous amount of time talking about how to reach our big goals. But what actually happens after you do? In this episode of Tales from The Lane, I'm looking at what it really feels like when something that started as a scribble in a notebook, an idea in a voice memo, or a dream you weren't quite sure you could pull off finally exists in the world. I'm sharing some of my own finish-line moments: opening the box containing the first copies of Beyond Potential, wrapping up the first year of my Virtual Summer Cello Festival, hearing the final cheers at our first Summer Pops concert, and realizing that the big moment itself isn't always where the real payoff happens. Sometimes the finish line is exhilarating. Sometimes it's strangely anticlimactic. Sometimes you're simply exhausted. But then you start noticing what changed. You trust yourself differently. You have evidence that you can make something real. Other people begin seeing you differently. New opportunities appear. Your network expands. Your tolerance for uncertainty grows. And the next big idea doesn't seem quite so impossible. I'm also sharing stories from several of my Mastermind clients whose original goals led to outcomes they couldn't possibly have predicted: an online festival that led to teaching at a dream conservatory and judging international competitions; a distinctive teaching methodology that caught the attention of a dream school; Zoom webinars that grew into national speaking opportunities; and work in dance and movement that is now taking one client around the world. Because sometimes your big project is an audition for opportunities you don't even know you're auditioning for. And perhaps the biggest shift of all is one you don't fully notice until afterward: The finish line didn't transform you. It revealed how much you'd already transformed along the way. In this episode: Why achieving a huge goal can feel surprisingly anticlimactic The unusual pride that comes from seeing your own idea become real How completing something gives you evidence for the next big thing Why experience teaches you to trust yourself when things inevitably go wrong How visible work changes the way other people perceive you The opportunities, relationships, and "street cred" that can compound from one completed goal Why you can't calculate the full ROI of a project before you begin How action changes identity Why the real payoff of a big goal is often the wake it leaves behind The finish line may last five minutes. What it changes can last for years. 📚 Get my book Beyond Potential 🎯 Interested in a 90-minute Strategy Session? Episode 132: How I'm Spending the Last 100 Days of the Year
2026/09/28
***The Creators Leadership Mastermind, my 9-month guided mastermind group for people ready to finally see their biggest goals come to life, is open for enrollment through October 11th. Book a call today to get the conversation started*** There are exactly 100 days left in 2026. And when I realized that while planning this week's episode, I couldn't resist turning it into a planning exercise. But this isn't a "100-day challenge," and I'm definitely not interested in squeezing every possible drop of productivity out of the rest of the year. Instead, I'm asking a different question: How can I use these 100 days well, while still enjoying the life I'm living? In this episode of Tales from The Lane, I'm taking you behind the scenes of my own Q4 planning and sharing the seven areas I'm thinking about as I decide what deserves my attention between now and the end of the year: Time. Money. Mind. People. Place. Numbers. Feeling. I'm looking at what I want to keep, stop, and start spending my time on, where I'm deliberately investing money in my own growth, what I'm willing to become a beginner at, and who I want around me as I enter a season of expansion in my work. I'm also sharing the goals and metrics I'll be watching, why my garden and dinner table belong in the plan right alongside my business goals, and the question I think matters more than all the others: How do I want to feel while I'm doing all of this? For me, the word for Q4 is energized. I don't want to reach December 31st having checked every box but completely depleted myself in the process. I want to arrive there thinking, Wow. That was fun. Look what happened. Because 100 days is long enough to make meaningful progress, but short enough that we can't spend 60 of them thinking about getting started. So grab a notebook and think through your own seven areas with me. And if you'd like to take yourself through a more complete planning process, grab my free Quarterly Retreat Planning Guide, where I'll walk you through my process of Planning, Creating, Organizing, and Optimizing. 📚 Get my book Beyond Potential 🎯 Interested in a 90-minute Strategy Session? Episode 131: How to Try Again (Differently) with Author, Steve Kamb
2026/09/21
What happens when something you really, really wanted doesn't work out? You don't get tenure. The business fails. The career you spent decades building no longer fits. A relationship ends. Or maybe you simply realize that the version of success you've been working toward isn't something you want anymore. For high achievers, failure can become tangled up with identity surprisingly quickly. We know how to work harder. We know how to persevere. But what happens when trying harder isn't actually the answer? This week on Tales from The Lane, I'm joined by Steve Kamb, author of the new book How to Try Again and founder of Nerd Fitness. Steve originally set out to write a book about behavior change and what happens when we fail to follow through on our goals. Then his own life went sideways. Personal and professional failures changed the book, and ultimately changed the way Steve thought about success, identity, resilience, and what it actually means to begin again. We talk about Steve's PACT framework: Pause, Accept, Change, Try, and why sometimes the most productive thing you can do is stop pushing forward long enough to figure out whether you're even still headed in the right direction. We also dig into what happens when achievement becomes part of your identity, why acceptance is very different from giving up, how to examine a past failure like a detective instead of a prosecutor, and the surprisingly difficult question: If you succeed at what you're doing now, will you actually want the life that success creates? Steve shares his own experience spending years in the wrong role inside the company he founded, eventually "firing himself" so he could return to the creative work that made him feel alive. And if you're currently somewhere between the person you used to be and the person you're becoming, we also talk about the deeply unglamorous but very real "caterpillar goo" stage of reinvention, when the old identity is breaking down and the new one hasn't quite formed yet. This is a conversation about failure, yes. But even more, it's about giving yourself permission to change your mind, choose another path, and try again differently. Episode 130: How to Build Your Next Chapter While Living Your Current One
2026/09/14
You want to write the book. Build the business. Prepare the audition. Launch the festival. Make the career pivot. There's just one problem: your current life is already full. A lot of deep-work advice assumes that you have three or four beautiful, uninterrupted hours available to disappear into your studio, office, or writing room. But what happens when you're trying to build something new while still working your current job, raising children, caring for parents, leading a team, maintaining relationships, and generally keeping your existing life running? In Episode 130 of Tales from The Lane, Kate explores the messy in-between period when your identity has begun to change, but your circumstances haven't caught up yet. You know where you want to go, but you still have to build the bridge from here to there. Kate shares practical ways to create meaningful deep-work time inside a packed life, including how to protect small blocks before attempting large ones, determine your "minimum useful block," work with your actual energy, decide what you'll do before the clock starts, create a tiny re-entry ritual, and measure progress by what moved rather than how many hours you worked. Because three focused 45-minute sessions a week add up to roughly 117 hours of concentrated work over a year. That's enough time to create something substantial. Most importantly, Kate challenges the fantasy that your real work can begin only after your life becomes less complicated. Your current life does not have to disappear before your next life can begin. Those small blocks aren't only producing the book, business, body of work, or career pivot. They're producing evidence of the person you're becoming. If this episode has you excited about what's next, enrollment is open for the Creators Leadership Mastermind, officially beginning in October. Episode 129: My Favorite Back-to-School Rituals for Grown-Ups
2026/09/07
Remember the thrill of a brand-new Trapper Keeper, freshly sharpened pencils, new clothes, new classes, and walking into school knowing you were officially one grade older? Why did we stop getting that feeling just because we grew up? In Episode 129 of Tales from The Lane, Kate takes a playful look at the internet's obsession with "September resets" and asks what back-to-school season could look like for those of us whose lives require slightly more maintenance than washing the duvet cover, restocking the fridge, and taking a hot-girl walk. Because while a Saturday reset probably isn't going to overhaul a grown-up life, there is something powerful about using these natural moments of transition to notice where we are, shake up our routines, and decide who we want to become next. Kate shares seven ways she's harnessing that back-to-school energy this September, including: Choosing something new to learn or improve Picking up an "extracurricular" purely because it's fun Finding your grown-up version of the new Trapper Keeper Refreshing your wardrobe without buying an entirely new one Using scent to mark a new season Renewing old friendships and making room for new ones Creating your own step-up ceremony to celebrate how much you've grown Kate also reflects on her own six-year evolution from professional cellist and teacher to coach, author, speaker, podcaster, and entrepreneur, and the throughlines she can finally see emerging from all of the experiments along the way. Because you didn't become the person you are today overnight. And you're not done becoming her. Episode 128: How to Design Your Calendar for the Results You Want
2026/08/31
What if you could predict where you'll be six months from now simply by looking at your calendar today? In this episode of Tales from The Lane, Kate walks through four common ways we manage our calendars, from allowing everyone else to determine how we spend our days to creating wildly ambitious schedules that leave no room for being human. Then she shares a practical framework for building a calendar around the results you actually want: WHO: Who needs your time and attention? WHY: Why do you want what you say you want? WHAT: What actually deserves a place in this season of your life? WHEN: Where will it realistically fit? HOW: What habits, systems, and accountability will help you follow through? This isn't about optimizing every minute of your day. It's about building a week that can actually support the life you say you want. And at the end of the episode, Kate gives you one question to answer: If I keep spending my time this way, am I going to like the results I have a year from now? Ready to make your biggest goal part of the plan? Enrollment is open for the Creators Leadership Mastermind, officially beginning in October. But you don't have to wait until then to start benefiting from the group, office hours, conversations, and accountability. Episode 127: The Success Cycle: When to Invest, When to Test, and When to Rest
2026/08/24
Are you supposed to be hustling right now...or resting? Should you be launching something, learning something, or stepping away for a while? Spend enough time watching other successful people online, and you'll find completely contradictory advice. One person is pulling all-nighters during a massive launch. Someone else is spending the summer at the lake house while their business runs without them. Another successful creator disappears for months, only to emerge with a new book, project, or idea. So...which one are we supposed to be doing? In this episode of Tales from The Lane, Kate introduces a framework she's noticed playing out again and again in successful careers, businesses, creative practices, and even in nature: Invest. Test. Rest. You'll learn how to recognize which phase you're currently in, why each one matters, and what happens when you get stuck in one phase for too long. Kate shares how investing in Beyond Potential eventually created opportunities for speaking, coaching, and visibility; why learning without eventually testing what you've learned can leave even incredibly smart people frustrated; and why rest isn't something you earn after you've exhausted yourself. It's an essential part of the cycle that allows you to evaluate what happened and prepare for what comes next. You'll also hear: How to tell the difference between a purchase and an investment Why successful careers require repeated periods of learning and experimentation The danger of becoming a perpetual student Why testing requires visibility, action, and sometimes a little hustle How intentional rest helps you capture what you've learned How Invest, Test, and Rest can overlap in different areas of your life A simple exercise for identifying your next investment, experiment, and period of rest Ready to invest in your next level? Episode 126: What Nature Can Teach Us About How We Work, with Mary Cay Durrant
2026/08/17
This week on Tales from The Lane, I'm joined by speaker, facilitator, and transformational leadership guide Mary Cay Durrant, whose work has touched thousands of senior leaders at more than 100 organizations, including Deloitte, Pepsi, KPMG, Children's Hospital Los Angeles, and Seattle Children's Hospital. Mary Cay spent years succeeding inside the corporate world while privately realizing that something was missing: joy, wonder, and a sense of being fully alive. An unexpected experience with horses changed the way she thought about leadership, work, and transformation and eventually led her to develop her Vibrant W.O.R.K. model, a framework inspired by living systems, neuroscience, and the patterns we see everywhere in nature. In this conversation, we explore: Why successful people can become disconnected from their own sense of aliveness What nature can teach us about careers, change, and letting go Why telling yourself the truth is often the beginning of transformation Mary Cay's four-part Vibrant W.O.R.K. model How to distinguish hard work that's draining you from hard work that's growing you Why relationships matter even more when you're becoming someone new The fascinating transformation of a caterpillar and what its "imaginal cells" can teach us about reinvention Why Mary Cay thinks we should pay more attention to ROE: Return on Energy How wonder, play, curiosity, and experimentation can change the way we experience work And perhaps most importantly, we talk about something that so many mid-career high achievers need to hear: Sometimes transformation really does feel like beating your wings against the inside of a cocoon. You can't see what's waiting on the other side yet. But that doesn't mean the work isn't working. Episode 125: What Waiting One More Year Really Costs You
2026/08/10
What if waiting one more year to pursue the thing you really want isn't as harmless as it seems? Most people don't consciously give up on their dreams. They postpone them. Work is busy. The timing isn't ideal. The kids need them. The economy feels uncertain. Maybe next year will be better. But one year has a funny way of becoming five. In this episode of Tales from The Lane, Kate explores the hidden costs of postponing the projects, career moves, businesses, books, creative ideas, and life changes that keep calling to us. You'll hear why waiting can make starting harder, how staying in the same role reinforces an identity you may already be outgrowing, and why starting earlier gives your work, skills, relationships, and opportunities more time to compound. Kate also explores one of the most overlooked costs of waiting: you delay the learning that can only happen once your idea enters the real world. As she says in the episode, "Most of the knowledge you need is waiting on the other side of the very action you're putting off." And perhaps most importantly, every year you postpone something that matters, you risk collecting evidence that you're someone who doesn't follow through, even when the real issue has nothing to do with your ability. By the end of the episode, Kate will ask you to imagine yourself one year from now and answer one uncomfortable question: If absolutely nothing has changed, how will you explain that to yourself? Then, she'll help you identify the first step you can take now to make sure next August tells a different story. Ready to stop carrying the same dream into another year? The Creators Leadership Mastermind is designed for people with a meaningful project, goal, or next chapter they're ready to actually follow through on. Episode 124: The Projects That Change Your Life Rarely Have Deadlines
2026/08/03
Ep. 124: The Projects That Change Your Life Rarely Have Deadlines Why is it so easy to finish work for someone else... but so hard to make progress on the projects that matter most to us? In this episode, I share a story from my years as a freelance musician in Boston. On paper, everything was going well. I had a thriving career, incredible opportunities, and a full calendar. But tucked away in a notebook were dozens of ambitious ideas that never became reality. Then, in March of 2020, one idea finally did. The Virtual Summer Cello Festival changed the course of my career and ultimately led me to coaching, writing Beyond Potential, and hosting this podcast. So what was different? It wasn't talent. It wasn't confidence. It was a deadline. In this episode, we'll explore why the projects that have the greatest potential to transform your career rarely come with built-in accountability—and how you can create the momentum they need. In this episode: Why meaningful projects are almost never assigned to us How urgent work crowds out important work The hidden power of public deadlines How to work backward from your launch date When to move a deadline—and when to keep going anyway Why perfectionism often disguises itself as preparation If you've been carrying around an idea for months—or years—this episode is your invitation to finally begin. Ready to work on your own career-defining project? Episode 123: Why Smart People Stay Stuck for Years
2026/07/20
Have you ever looked around at your life and thought... "Everything is fine... so why do I feel so stuck?" This week, we're exploring one of the most common challenges I hear from high-achieving professionals. They have successful careers, strong reputations, and lives that look great from the outside, but inside, they can't shake the feeling that they've been standing still. In this episode, we explore why smart, capable people often stay stuck for years, even when they know they're meant for something more. You'll learn: Why success itself can become part of the problem How our identities keep us attached to lives we've outgrown Why doing the same things produces the same thinking The trap of waiting for the "right opportunity" Why momentum always feels awkward at first How embarrassment keeps high achievers from becoming beginners again The role community plays in creating lasting change Three simple things you can do today to start building momentum If you've been telling yourself that next year will be different, this episode is for you. 📚 Get my book Beyond Potential 🎯 Interested in a 90-minute Strategy Session? or DM me "Strategy" 📩 Subscribe to my weekly newsletter, The Weekend List 📸 Instagram: @kkayaian
Episode 122: What Could Change in the Next 90 Days?
2026/07/06
Most people think planning season happens in January. I disagree. July might be the most powerful planning month of the entire year. By now, we have six months of evidence. We know what's working, what's draining us, and which goals still matter. Instead of waiting for another New Year, this is the perfect time to pause, reflect, and intentionally design the next 90 days. In this episode, I'm pulling back the curtain on my own Q3 plans and sharing exactly how I approach quarterly planning. You'll hear: Why I believe 90 days is the ideal planning horizon My biggest priorities for Q3 How I'm thinking about my coaching business, speaking work, and second book Why I'm intentionally reducing some commitments The surprising power of creating assets for your future self Client stories of people who transformed their businesses, homes, and careers through focused quarterly planning The framework I'll be teaching during my Q3 Retreat Whether you're looking to launch something new, make progress on a long-delayed project, improve your systems, or simply create more intentional momentum, this episode will help you think differently about the next season of your life. 2026/06/22
I just returned from my first-ever Craft + Commerce conference in Boise, Idaho—and I came home with far more than a notebook full of quotes. In this episode, I share the biggest lessons I learned from spending eight days, twelve flights, and countless conversations with creators, entrepreneurs, speakers, authors, and friends whose work has shaped my own. We'll talk about: Why I almost didn't go The metrics everyone was (and wasn't) talking about Lessons from Simon Alexander Ong, Jay Papasan, Nicole Burke, Jonathan Fields, Barrett Brooks, Gannon Meyer, and Gabby Beckford How rooms change us I also share why these experiences inspired me to create something new: my online Q3 Stay-at-Home Retreat.
