Description

Tales from a world where everyone surfs. Nick’s a bald headed Boomer in recovery from surf rage. Hannah’s a blonde Millennial with a surfboard addiction. It’s like we’re from different planets! We really should not be friends. But this is 2026, and anything is possible, in and out of the surf. Here’s our playful, quizzical and highly informed look at modern surf culture in all its watery magnificence, and how it reflects all the social change we see in the world today. Oh, and watch out for epic guests.

HOW TO MAKE A SURF FILM, WITH DAV FOX
2026/10/21
Surf films, even quite short ones, are not simple things. Especially if you want them to actually be interesting. Dav Fox is one of the finer cinematographers in the game, yet Dav takes it a few steps further, into the realm of story. The Illusion Of Control, his recent work with Craig Anderson and SW’s cover star James Kusitino, sows us just what happens when Dav gets a sniff of the gold behind the action. Nick and Hannah put Dav very gently on the rack as he explains the minor nightmare of creativity, his early life as a bodyboarding film star, and why he dreads entering the editing bay.
SHE IS THE HURRICANE: ROCHELLE BALLARD
2026/10/13
This year’s been a deeply sketchy one for many residents of the Hawaiian islands. The warming eastern Pacific has triggered numerous hurricanes near Mexico and sent a number of them skittering toward the islands. Cue gale force winds, floods, and repeated destruction across the chain. Nick and Hannah asked Kauai’s Rochelle to come tell us about how this is playing out, and somehow unleashed the force of nature that is this fantastic woman: ex-elite ‘90s pro, original Blue Crush star, yoga teacher, retreat runner, and mentor to many of the modern Hawaiian generation. Rochelle’s all of it, and she’s all here for us.
SHAPING FOR THE GODS, WITH MATT BIOLOS
2026/09/18
San Clemente, California, has two town centres. The first and most commonly known is a shop-lined street leading down to the pier. The second is a slightly tangled old industrial area not far from the railroad — the dusty home of some of the world’s great surfboard companies. Right in the middle of it is Matt Biolos, who after 40 years in the business has turned his labels Mayhem and …Lost into icons known to surfers worldwide, an achievement he refers to as “Revenge of the Nerds”. Matt is nothing if not dryly witty, so Hannah and Nick invited him to explain just how this all happened, and what it’s like to be  badgered by seemingly a quarter of the CT for their quivers.
JUST SPORT?? UNTANGLING SWEENEY, WITH REBECCA OLIVE
2026/09/16
Sometimes things happen. Sometimes they just blow up. This week pretty much the whole sporting world — including surfing — was blown up by an ad for an American sports prediction site featuring one of its key investors, the actress Sydney Sweeney, nude except for various pieces of sporting equipment. “Just sport,” cooed no-clothed Sydney, gazing down from a basketball hoop. The appeal was naked, the response was instant. But while it was kind of epic seeing so many champion women athletes telling Sydney what was sport and what wasn’t, was sport even the point? Nick and Hannah turned to the ultra-sharp Dr Rebecca Olive to help untangle the carnage.
Just One Big Turn, with supercoach Matt Grainger
2026/09/03
Great surfing, like we just watched at the WSL CT Fiji Pro, can seem like magic to the rest of us. What are they DOING out there? All that timing, power and flow, coloured by small yet unmistakable flashes of individual style — it doesn’t come out of nowhere. Matt Grainger, Manly surf school and Surfers Gym owner and high end pro coach, has been fascinated by this craziness pretty much all his extensive surfing life. Here he joins Hannah and Nick for a deep dive into the skills that define elite surfers — and how he helps the groms along that path.  Subscribe to WSBF: https://open.spotify.com/show/0dnQnwQCt1vaTek7VMLIwA?si=618c6e5a4f084208 Subscribe to Surfing World - since 1962, the pure take on surfing: https://surfingworld.com.au/subscribe/
THE SILVER GOBLIN: TOM CARROLL, A DECADE ON FROM DORIAN
2026/07/15
“Sorry, Mr Pipeline!” Imagine surfing at a psychotically high level for 50 years, then being run over in a two foot beachie by an unsteady grommet. This is what happened to Tom Carroll, just a couple of days before Nick and Hannah put him on the spot to follow up Shane Dorian’s awesome take on ageing. What lessons do you learn in your mid-60s from stuff like this? What do you give up, and what do you gain? Is there some sort of weird trick involved in surfing extremely well into the last third of your life, or is it just a crapshoot? And possibly more important: what’s a Pro Turn, 2026-style, and can Tom still do one?
CHASED OUT OF THE WATER: OUR EVOLVING SHARK COUNTRY
2026/06/25
There’s never been a time quite like this one. Since Surfing World published issue 428, “Shark Country”, there’s been three shark fatalities around the nation and one very seriously injured swimmer at a Sydney metro beach. Drones are being dispensed to boardriders clubs, shark bite kits are common sightings on coastal trails, and surfers — including Hannah and Nick — are being chased out of formerly safe waters on a daily basis. There’s a lot of shared concern out there. In this episode we get into some of what we’ve learned since the magazine hit the streets, and try to answer some smart questions from the readership.
THE AGEING DILEMMA, WITH SHANE DORIAN
2026/06/17
Does anyone really think they’ll get old some day? The whole notion of ageing seems to run counter to surf culture’s obsession with youth — after all, at some level, maybe staying young is what it’s all about. But how do you manage that as your body and mind begin the inevitable process of change through mid-life and beyond? Be like a modern tech-bro and obsess instead over immortality? Kick back on the couch, add a few kilos, and reminisce? Or just try to do the best with what you’ve got? The fabulous Shane Dorian, now unbelievably 53 years of age, joins Nick and Hannah to explore this modern dilemma.
GETTING IT DONE, WITH “NOW DAYS” CREATOR JODIE NELSON
2026/06/03
It’s one thing watching a surf movie, or any movie really. It’s quite another thing to make one. “Now Days”, the recent release via Red Bull’s highly skilled and solidly funded media team, is a classic example. It come across as clean, sharp and clever — you see the surfing, but you never see the work. Jodie Nelson is a surfer and film-maker from Seal Beach, California who has spent decades developing the skills required to pull off such a project. Jodie is formulating culture on the run, driven by smarts and an intensely competitive nature, and Nick and Hannah dived right in with her on what this stuff takes. Watch the film here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okE2130c4Xw
SEEING THINGS DIFFERENTLY, WITH TRENT MITCHELL
2026/05/28
What’s a “designer?” Can a designer even tell you? Trent Mitchell is a highly gifted photographer and graphic artist who’s well into one of the most interesting career arcs of his generation. If you’ve seen his book “Australian Lustre” you’ll already know that. But Trent has also signed on as art director of Surfing World, which means he’s deeply tangled up with Nick’s and Hannah’s supposedly creative lives on a possibly far too regular basis. We spoke to Trent as he was bracing himself to view proofs of an entire SW re-design, which he’d tackled on about a week’s notice. All we can say about that is we’re glad he’s around … but he’s a lot more than his work with us, as you’ll discover here.
THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT: SELLING THE TOUR
2026/05/11
What happens when you sell a business? Everything changes, that’s what happens. Which means very interesting times ahead for all the people involved in the amazing, entertaining, possibly confusing yet all round brilliant circus you just watched go down at Snapper Rocks. Because the World Surf League is hunting a buyer — or as the press release put it, after “a significant amount of inbound interest”, they’ve decided to “explore strategic alternatives to accelerate the next phase of growth”. It’s anyone’s guess how this will play out, but of course Nick and Hannah have a few ideas. Has the WSL’s 13 years in charge actually made pro surfing worth someone else’s money? And how might this affect the slow burn between pro surfing and Olympic selection for the LA Games?
IN THE WARM SEAT: FELICITY PALMATEER
2026/04/23
Talking for a living isn’t the cakewalk people assume. This is especially true in sport. Even if you have something to say, it can be spun by circumstance — maybe you don’t mesh with the commentary team, maybe nerves mess up your message, maybe your voice is just plain unpleasant! None of this is true of Flick Palmateer. In the WSL CT broadcast machine, she brings a sharp mind to the game, along with that rare ability to warm up the room — when Flick’s talking, you’re in no doubt there’s a fellow human being present. Plus she’s in the midst of a career expansion you don’t often see, from pro surfer locked in the surf culture to a public figure with bigger goals. Plus she has Nick and Hannah’s favourite quality: she doesn’t muck around!
WHEN SURFING MAKES PEOPLE CRY: PAM BURRIDGE
2026/03/23
Ever been sacked from a job you love? Even better — ever thought you might be sacked, and had to hang around for days in the office corridor waiting to find out? This is what a coupla handfuls of professional surfers just went through at Merewether Beach, with the tiny little addition of it all being on full, worldwide, public display. Competition surfing might be the only kind of surfing capable of making a surfer actually cry, and it sure did in Newcastle. So…why do it, and how do you accommodate the mad rushes of feeling around winning and losing long enough to make a career out of it? We asked the fantastic Pam Burridge to help us understand this carnage.
THE CHANGAS: SHOW IT OR BLOW IT
2026/03/08
While we’re on the subject…competition! In case you haven’t tried it, Hannah’s recently gone there on your behalf, and she’s rapidly finding out what a triple-edged sword it can be. You THINK you’re ripping, everyone TELLS YOU you’re ripping, you KNOW you’re the best … and you come third in your heat. Imagine going through this ego-mincer for a living. Well, over the coming week, the citizens of the fine city of Newcastle are about to see it in all its awkward glory, as a few handfuls of surfers try to jump levels — from the Challenger series to the big game. They have a week to show it or blow it. Who are they, and how will they survive this nonsense?
THE OLYMPICS: GOTTA BE IN IT TO WIN IT
2026/02/24
In the past four days, we’ve seen a classic, vaguely farcical, perhaps even hilarious story play out at the very top end of organised competitive surfing. On the surface it looks pretty simple: the WSL CT pros are cut up over a new Olympic selection criteria issued by the International Surfing Association for LA28. The criteria looks like a kick in the teeth for the CT crew, limiting their selection to just 10 of the 48 slots on offer. Couple that with the fact that nobody at the ISA asked for their opinion, and blammo! Angry surf stars everywhere. But behind this brouhaha lies a deeper saga: an epic, long running power play over what’s become the most precious prize in the sport: an Olympic gold medal. Nick and Hannah go to town on it with the help of the fantastic and very clear-minded Leo Fioravanti, who knows from experience what a medal shot feels like.
