Ecclesiastes 3: Even the Wise Can't Outrun Death (audio)
2024/02/18
*So I turned to consider wisdom and madness and folly. For what can the man do who comes after the king? Only what has already been done. Then I saw that there is more gain in wisdom than in folly, as there is more gain in light than in darkness. The wise person has his eyes in his head, but the fool walks in darkness. And yet I perceived that the same event happens to all of them. Then I said in my heart, “What happens to the fool will happen to me also. Why then have I been so very wise?” And I said in my heart that this also is vanity. For of the wise as of the fool there is no enduring remembrance, seeing that in the days to come all will have been long forgotten. How the wise dies just like the fool! So I hated life, because what is done under the sun was grievous to me, for all is vanity and a striving after wind. Ecclesiastes 2:12-17 (ESV)* *I also gathered for myself silver and gold and the treasure of kings and provinces. I got singers, both men and women, and many concubines, the delight of the sons of man. So I became great and surpassed all who were before me in Jerusalem. Also my wisdom remained with me. And whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them. I kept my heart from no pleasure, for my heart found pleasure in all my toil, and this was my reward for all my toil. Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had expended in doing it, and behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun. Ecclesiastes 2:8-11 (ESV)  Theme of Ecc. 2:12-17: Death is coming, so be sure you are ready.  What does Ecclesiastes teach about death? 1. We must face the reality of death. 2. We must get the whole story on life and death.  3. The gospel view of life and death invites us to be prepared for eternity.
Ecclesiastes 2: Self Indulgence Will Never Satisfy (audio)
2024/02/11
1 I said in my heart, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure; enjoy yourself.” But behold, this also was vanity. 2 I said of laughter, “It is mad,” and of pleasure, “What use is it?” 3 I searched with my heart how to cheer my body with wine—my heart still guiding me with wisdom—and how to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was good for the children of man to do under heaven during the few days of their life. 4 I made great works. I built houses and planted vineyards for myself. 5 I made myself gardens and parks, and planted in them all kinds of fruit trees. 6 I made myself pools from which to water the forest of growing trees. 7 I bought male and female slaves, and had slaves who were born in my house. I had also great possessions of herds and flocks, more than any who had been before me in Jerusalem. 8 I also gathered for myself silver and gold and the treasure of kings and provinces. I got singers, both men and women, and many concubines, the delight of the sons of man. 9 So I became great and surpassed all who were before me in Jerusalem. Also my wisdom remained with me. 10 And whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them. I kept my heart from no pleasure, for my heart found pleasure in all my toil, and this was my reward for all my toil. 11 Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had expended in doing it, and behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun. Ecclesiastes 2:1-11 (ESV)  Theme of Ecc. 2:1-11: You can’t buy peace, but you can receive it.  Solomon pursued peace through pleasure… 1. Parties (2:1-2)  2. Projects (2:4-6)  3. Power (2:7) 4. Possessions (2:7-8) 5. People (2:8)  How do we live well in our “self-indulgence” culture? 1. We must resist the temptation to be pleasure driven.  2. We should consider that delayed gratification has its roots in the gospel.  3. We must nurture the joys of obedience to Jesus now.
Wisdom Will Never Be Enough (audio)
2024/02/04
12 I the Preacher have been king over Israel in Jerusalem. 13 And I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven. It is an unhappy business that God has given to the children of man to be busy with. 14 I have seen everything that is done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind. 15 What is crooked cannot be made straight, and what is lacking cannot be counted. 16 I said in my heart, “I have acquired great wisdom, surpassing all who were over Jerusalem before me, and my heart has had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.” 17 And I applied my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also is but a striving after wind. 18 For in much wisdom is much vexation, and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.  Ecclesiastes 1:12-18 (ESV) Theme of Ecc. 1:12-18:  Ignorance may be bliss, but if you know Jesus you know what matters most.  Solomon had… 1. Access to wisdom (1:12) 2. A hunger for wisdom (1:13) 3. Perspective on wisdom (1:14) 4. A handle on the limits of wisdom (1:15) 5. Gained much wisdom (1:17-18) How do we handle the "pursuit of wisdom"? 1. We must remind ourselves that knowledge alone will never save us (or satisfy us). 2. We must resist the temptation to believe that access to information equals application of wisdom.  3. We must strive to know Jesus above all else.
Ecclesiastes 1: A Futile Life (audio)
2024/01/28
*1 The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. 2 Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity. 3 What does man gain by all the toil at which he toils under the sun? 4 A generation goes, and a generation comes, but the earth remains forever. 5 The sun rises, and the sun goes down, and hastens to the place where it rises. 6 The wind blows to the south and goes around to the north; around and around goes the wind, and on its circuits the wind returns. 7 All streams run to the sea, but the sea is not full; to the place where the streams flow, there they flow again. 8 All things are full of weariness; a man cannot utter it; the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing. 9 What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun. 10 Is there a thing of which it is said, “See, this is new”? It has been already in the ages before us. 11 There is no remembrance of former things, nor will there be any remembrance of later things yet to be among those who come after.  Ecclesiastes 1:1-11 (ESV)* Theme of Ecc. 1:1-11: Apart from Jesus, the world is endlessly busy and hopelessly inconclusive.   What do we do about this “futile life”? 1. We must account for the despondence around us. 2. We must develop compassion for those still looking for answers. 3. We must constantly reset our gaze on Jesus. What does man gain by all the toil at which he toils under the sun? Ecclesiastes 1:3 (ESV) For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? Mark 8:36 (ESV)   Questions to consider – Adrian Rogers: 1. When I get where I am going, where will I be? 2. If I reach my goals what will I have? 3. Is what I’m living for worth Him dying for?
Ecclesiastes: Solomon (audio)
2024/01/21
*1 Solomon made a marriage alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt. He took Pharaoh's daughter and brought her into the city of David until he had finished building his own house and the house of the Lord and the wall around Jerusalem. 2 The people were sacrificing at the high places, however, because no house had yet been built for the name of the Lord. 3 Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of David his father, only he sacrificed and made offerings at the high places. 4 And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for that was the great high place. Solomon used to offer a thousand burnt offerings on that altar. 5 At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night, and God said, “Ask what I shall give you.”6 And Solomon said, “You have shown great and steadfast love to your servant David my father, because he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart toward you. And you have kept for him this great and steadfast love and have given him a son to sit on his throne this day. 7 And now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of David my father, although I am but a little child. I do not know how to go out or come in. 8 And your servant is in the midst of your people whom you have chosen, a great people, too many to be numbered or counted for multitude. 9 Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?” 10 It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this. 11 And God said to him, “Because you have asked this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches or the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right, 12 behold, I now do according to your word. Behold, I give you a wise and discerning mind, so that none like you has been before you and none like you shall arise after you.  13 I give you also what you have not asked, both riches and honor, so that no other king shall compare with you, all your days. 14 And if you will walk in my ways, keeping my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your days.” 1 Kings 3:1-14 (ESV)*   If he could “turn back time” Solomon might say… 1. Take inventory of your struggles early on; they will often follow you (3:1-3). 1 Kings 3:1-3 (ESV)*  2. Don’t stop asking God for wisdom (3:7-9).   *7 And now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of David my father, although I am but a little child. James 1:5 (ESV)*  3. Life really can be quite simple: "fear God and keep his commandments" (3:14).  *14 And if you will walk in my ways, keeping my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your days. 1 Kings 3:14 (ESV)*  *The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. Ecclesiastes 12:13 (ESV
Introduction to Ecclesiastes (audio)

1 The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. 2 Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity. 3 What does man gain by all the toil at which he toils under the sun?  Ecclesiastes 1:1-3 (ESV)* Key Themes from Ecclesiastes  -Living for here only will always come up empty. -God means for us to enjoy this world. 24 There is nothing better for a person than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment in his toil. This also, I saw, is from the hand of God, 25 for apart from him who can eat or who can have enjoyment? 26 For to the one who pleases him God has given wisdom and knowledge and joy, but to the sinner he has given the business of gathering and collecting, only to give to one who pleases God. This also is vanity and a striving after wind. Ecclesiastes 2:24-26 (ESV)* -We must learn to see this world from God’s perspective. -Experience should develop maturity and wisdom. 1 Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come and the years draw near of which you will say, “I have no pleasure in them”; 2 before the sun and the light and the moon and the stars are darkened and the clouds return after the rain,” Ecclesiastes 12:1-2 (ESV)* -The gospel gives us permission to both enjoy this world and live fully for the next. That which is, already has been; that which is to be, already has been; and God seeks what has been driven away. Ecclesiastes 3:15 (ESV)*
The Church: A New Year (audio)

5 Thus says the Lord: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the Lord. 6 He is like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see any good come. He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land. 7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. 8 He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.” - Jeremiah 17:5-8 (ESV)  Ask yourself, “Who am I trusting?”  Takeaways for a New Year   Tend the Garden  Take the Garden Transplant the Garden

1 Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. 2 And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, “It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. 3 Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty.   4 But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” 5 And what they said pleased the whole gathering, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch. 6 These they set before the apostles, and they prayed and laid their hands on them. 7 And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.  Acts 6:1-7 (ESV) 1. Biblical leaders approach challenges with wise solutions (6:2-4).  2. The church must be made up of "layers of leaders" (6:5-6).  3. God often blesses healthy leadership with gospel growth (6:7).  Applications -Don’t just be a spectator (or arm chair quarterback).  -Be open to your next step. -Ask yourself, "How might the gospel be multiplied through my role at PGBC?"

1 Now there were in the church at Antioch prophets and teachers, Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a lifelong friend of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. 2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3 Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.  - Acts 13:1-3 (ESV)  3 Key Questions – Acts 13:1-3  1. Will we be a developing church?  2. Will we be a sending church? 3. Will we be a praying church?  Prayer Points  Pray for a place.  Pray for the people.  Pray for passion. Pray for God's power.
