Texas Tales S1 E9: A Little Piece of Germany in Texas
2026/10/13
🇩🇪🤠 How did a little piece of Germany take root deep in the heart of Texas?
In Season 1, Episode 9 of Texas Tales with Sam Houston, we journey into the rolling hills of Central Texas to meet the German immigrants who arrived during the 1840s searching for freedom, opportunity and a place to build new lives.
Their voyage carried them across the Atlantic and into a rugged frontier filled with uncertainty, disease and extraordinary hardship. Yet they endured—and created thriving communities such as New Braunfels, Fredericksburg, Boerne, Comfort and Luckenbach.
Discover the ambitious—and frequently chaotic—colonization efforts of the Adelsverein, the founding of New Braunfels and Fredericksburg, and the remarkable 1847 agreement John O. Meusebach negotiated with Comanche leaders, including Buffalo Hump and Santa Anna.
The legacy of these German Texans still surrounds us today—in the Hill Country’s stone buildings, historic dance halls, festivals, music, language, brewing traditions, smoked sausage, and Texas barbecue. They came looking for a new home. Instead, they helped create a new Texas.
