The Garbage Podcast – Book Reviews: Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers
2026/08/07
‘What harm was one more podcast?’
Yes, we may have been teeny bit premature in heralding the end of the podcast a couple of years ago. So why are we back, all be it briefly? Well, with a new Red Dwarf novel having just been published with Rob Grant & Andrew Marshall’s Titan, as well as suggestion that Doug may look to turn his his intended Dave special into a novel, it felt that there was a big chunk of the Red Dwarf universe that we’d not covered properly on the podcast. So to put that right, and as something of a coda to the podcast, we’ll be releasing a limited series of episodes, each discussing a different book. But with Titan having only recently been released, to give us and indeed you a chance to properly absorb it, we’re taking a slower run up by first covering all of the prior novels, starting with this episode covering Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers.
Is the novel just a straight retelling of a collection of TV episodes? How does it hide important plot strands early on? And given it’s less than 25 pages into the book before Lister is being offered services in a robot brothel, just why on Earth were we all reading this book at an age where we could still be singing soprano in the school choir?
All these age inappropriate questions and more will be covered as Alex, James and Andrew find themselves alone in a Godless universe and out of Audible credits.
You can download it from the link below or via Apple Podcasts and if you enjoy it then please do leave us a rating/review to let other people know; we’d greatly appreciate it. You can also stream the podcast on the player below:

Back To Earth Retrospective: Part Three
2024/04/12
In our final ever episode of The Garbage Podcast, we’re closing out our celebration of Back to Earth’s 15th anniversary with a look back at the story’s concluding part.
By the episode’s own quantum logic, is Lister a murderer? Which prime time family drama does Doug think is naff? And if your sitcom seems to be leaning more heavily into drama than normal, can you balance that by having one of your cast smash their c**k and bollocks into a desk, while two of the others get twatted by rakes?
All these painful questions and more will be covered as Alex, James and Andrew try one last time to prove that even though they’re disgusting, sometimes they can be quite listenable.

Back To Earth Retrospective: Part Two
2024/04/11
In our continuing celebration of Back to Earth’s 15th anniversary, we look back at the story’s second part in our penultimate podcast.
Does this part have some similarities with another British televisual institution? Just why won’t real life Fan Club chairman James Bull change his name to Reg Wharf? And at what point in the production did it occur to anyone that a Smart car only has two seats?
All these compact questions and more will be covered as Alex, James and Andrew reminisce about what is arguably the strangest episode of Red Dwarf ever made.

Back To Earth Retrospective: Part One
2024/04/10
‘Just had to say one last goodbye.’
Yes, as we said on our last episode, we have reached the end of this podcast. But while we’ve had episodes covering every TV episode of the show, there’s one story we’ve never covered. Until now. So for one final time, join us over the next three days for three editions of The Garbage Podcast covering Red Dwarf’s return with Back to Earth.
How did the approach to the show change after a decade off air? What effect did the rushed and limited production have on the story? And what strange abuse was shouted at the cast at the Berkley Square promo for the story?
All these deranged ramblings and more will be covered as Alex, James and Andrew debate what is the greater sign of listlessness; spending your days trying to annoy your bunk mate by ironing sneezes, or spending over a decade podcasting about Red Dwarf?

Series VIII Reviews: Only The Good
2024/04/05
In this final edition of our celebration of Series VIII’s 25th anniversary, we look back at the series’ finale, ‘Only The Good’.
Was it a fitting end for both the series, and for a decade, seemingly for the show itself? Given his skelital form, can one really knee Death in the happy sack? And in the space of one podcast, how many times can we fit in the word Cesiumfrancolithicmyxialobidiumrixydixydoxidexidroxhide?
All these sesquipedalian questions and more will be addressed as for the final time, Alex, James and Andrew return to the show for a silver anniversary.

2024/04/01
In this edition of our continuing celebration of Series VIII’s 25th anniversary, we look back at the seventh episode of the series, Pete (Part Two).
Do all JMC ships carry a stock of dead cows? Would Ridley Scott’s magnum opus be improved by replacing the alien with a dinosaur? And Archie; just… why?
All these questions and more will be addressed as Alex, James and Andrew prick holes in the penultimate episode of the series.

2024/03/25

How does stretching the sotry to two parts affect the structure? What is the terrible secret of Birman? And how many knob based gags is too many?
All these hard questions and more will be addressed as Alex, James and Andrew undertake the punishment duty of examining ‘the one with the dinosaur in’.

Series VIII Reviews: Krytie TV
2024/03/18
In this edition of our continuing celebration of Series VIII’s 25th anniversary, we look back at the fifth episode of the series, Krytie TV.
Do the jokes save the episode from the questionable premise? Just how dirty are the female inmates of The Tank if Women’s Shower Night take a full 3 hours? And what about… THE APPEAL!
All these questions are more will addressed as Alex, James and Andrew finally get candid with to the epiosde we’ve dreaded talking about all these years.

Series VIII Reviews: Cassandra
2024/03/11
In this edition of our continuing celebration of Series VIII’s 25th anniversary, we look back at the third episode of the series, Back in The Red – Part 3.
Is iTunes right to include this episode in ‘Doug’s Definitive Dwarf’? What is the optimum number of stages to make a Rube Goldberg machine funny? And just why does a super cimputer with the power to accuratly predict the future require a floor standing fan?
All these questions are more will be addressed as Alex, James and Andrew return to the episode widely regarded as the best of the series and see if it blows them away.

2024/03/04
In this edition of our continuing celebration of Series VIII’s 25th anniversary, we look back at the third episode of the series, Back in The Red – Part 3.
Is the dance sequcne there to give the casta. chance to do their ‘bit’? Does the sentancing make any sense whatsoever? And when did Aardman move into screensavers?
All these questions are more will addressed as Alex, James and Andrew pause to mull over the concluding part of this most unusual trilogy.

Series VIII Reviews: Back in The Red (Part II)
2024/02/25
It’s been 25 years today since Back in The Red (Part II) first aired, and we’re marking the occasion by looking back at the episode in a brand new Garbage Podcast.
Does the epiosde start to betray the strechting of the script to three parts? Which supermarket seems to still be thriving after 3 million years? And just what was that crew member doing to Rimmer in the cupboard?
All these explicit questions and more will be addressed as Alex, James and Andrew break out the confidental files to appear smarter, only to have it backfire in their stupid faces.

Series VIII Reviews: Back in The Red (Part I)
2024/02/18
2024 marks the silver anniversary of Red Dwarf VIII, and as such, we’ve all been sentenced to bring you a brand new series of Garbage Podcasts to mark the occasion, starting this week with ‘Back in The Red: Part I’ which aired 25 years ago today.
How does the change of set up reorientate the series? Which one is Argyle and which one is the baby? And does the world still love a bastard when he paves the way for Little Britain?
All these questions and more will be addressed as Alex, James and Andrew put the eight run of the show in the dock and get Mr Thornton to read it it’s rights.
May the farce (of taking 11 years of podcasting to reach this series) be with you.

Series X: Ten Years On (Byte II)
2022/10/11
In this second part of our special edition of The Garbage Podcast, we continue our look back at Series X a decade on from when it first aired.
How did the cast’s approach to the characters change this series? Did the late model work help save the visual look of the series? And with various themes and plot strands running throughout the episodes, what is the wider significance of the Cat being unable to wipe his arse?
All these single ply questions and and more will be addressed as Alex, James and Andrew conclude their evaluation of the series ten years on.

Series X: Ten Years On (Byte I)
2022/10/04
Today marks 10 years since Series X of the show first aired in 2012, and to mark the occasion, we’re looking back at the series in this first of a two part special edition of The Garbage Podcast.
How have our feelings changed a decade on from when we first reviewed the episodes on this podcast? How did it set the template for what would follow? And for old times sake, how did a can of larger, a bad pun and an old woman shouting obscenities at EA Games play into the promotion of the series?
All these ill advised questions and and more will be addressed as Alex, James and Andrew look take a nostalgic journey back ten years to the start of the series and this start of this very podcast.

Lost Episodes – Identity Within
2022/03/14
Having just covered all the episodes in Series VII to mark it’s 25th anniversary, it seems like the perfect time to look back at the lost episode of the series, Identity Within, in a brand new in depth edition of The Garbage Podcast.
Could the episode ever have truly been realised? What differences in tone are there in an episode that hasn’t had a pass from Doug? And What about the concept of mushy peas makes them inherently funny?
All these chip shop favourite questions and and more will be addressed as Alex, James and Andrew look back and ponder what could have been.
