282. How following your creative passions can lead to incredible success! with interior designer Paloma Contreras
2024/02/23
SHOW NOTES
282. How following your creative passions can lead to incredible success! with interior designer Paloma Contreras
TOPIC:
Have you ever talked yourself out of taking a leap or trying something new because you convinced yourself that you needed another degree, an additional certification, more experience, a better network, more followers, more downloads, or just MORE?
Qualifications and experience are incredibly important to be sure, but sometimes we let what we think is required of a job or new pursuit stand in the way of our even taking the first step toward learning important new skills.
This part of my conversation with award-winning interior designer and best-selling author Paloma Contreras is one of my favorites.
ABOUT THIS WEEK’S GUEST:
Paloma Contreras honed her distinct eye for style over more than a decade in the design industry, and developed a reputation for designing beautiful interiors in her signature modern-meets-traditional aesthetic resulting in spaces that feel polished, refined, and effortless.
Paloma has repeatedly been named to the prestigious ELLE Decor “A-List” of the top interior designers in the world. She has also been recognized as a “Next Wave” interior designer by House Beautiful and has been named to LUXE Magazine’s “Gold List”. Paloma has been named one of the Top Social Media Influencers in the Home category by Forbes and has one of the Top 10 Instagram accounts to follow for interior design, according to ELLE Decor. Her work has been featured extensively in countless publications including ELLE Decor, Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, Vogue, Domino, Luxe, Traditional Home, Southern Living, among others.
Paloma designs a lighting collection for Visual Comfort & Co., and has written two best-selling design books: “Dream Design Live,” and “The New Classic Home.” Her curated retail shop, Paloma & Co, opened in Houston’s River Oaks neighborhood in January 2019, and has expanded to include an online platform.
Paloma’s pivot from high school Spanish teacher to design blogger, to marketing exec, to interior designer and author, have one critically important thing in common: Paloma wasn’t afraid to try to do something she would have to learn on the job. She also wasn’t afraid of the setbacks and even failures that would come with trial and error, and she certainly wasn’t afraid of hard work.
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE:
How Paloma made the career pivot from high school Spanish teacher to award-winning interior designer;
How Paloma thinks about the creative process and where she finds inspiration;
How she built her multi-faceted design business;
How she learned how much to charge for her work;
How she turned a blogging hobby into a multi dimensional design business with fabulous collaborations;
Paloma also shares some very tactical advice on accessorizing and adding those very personal layers that turn a house into a home that reflects its occupants.

280. Unleashing the Power of Collaboration: Weaving empathy and compassion into your brand with Fanm Mon Founder Sophia Demirtas!
2024/02/02
SHOW NOTES
Episode 280: How to weave the power of collaboration into your brand
Guest: Sophia Demirtas, founder of fashion design house Fanm Mon
THIS WEEK’S TOPIC:
When we allow ourselves to think broadly, and to ignore tendencies toward comparison, it can enhance our ability to create, and can help us do so in bigger and bolder ways.
As we kick off our third collaboration series with the creative entrepreneur network The Southern Coterie, it’s fitting that we kick off the series with an entrepreneur whose approach to collaboration is deeply embedded in her past career as a social worker, as well as in her rich Haitian heritage.
When collaborations don’t work, it may be because they simply aren’t a good fit. But, it’s also possible that one side –or both — may be missing an other-oriented approach that is rooted in empathy.
ABOUT THIS WEEK’S GUEST: Sophia Demirtas is the founder of Turkish-based fashion house Fanm Mon. Fanm Mon is known for its gorgeous embroidery, made-to-order designs, and attention to special details that are a nod to Sophia’s Haitian heritage. But Sophia’s career didn’t begin in fashion. It’s that interesting detail that informs how she approaches the many collaborations she and her company are engaged in, and also how she manages her team.
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN FROM THE CONVERSATION:
How Sophia built Fanm Mon.
Sophia’s philosophy behind the brand.
Her path to becoming a fashion entrepreneur.
Why she embraced a made-to-order model.
How she approaches collaborations with other brands.
The challenges of building a brand in a country that is new to you.
Scaling the brand.
Different approaches to collaborations with other brands and with influencers.
There is so much great advice and perspective in this episode, and I’m excited to hear your feedback. You can reach me via the link in the show notes which you’ll find here in Episode 280: shesaidshesaidpodcast.com . Or, email me: [email protected]

279. What can we do to create more civility in society? with Alexandra Hudson
2024/01/26
SHOW NOTES
Episode 279: What can we do to create more civility in society?
Guest: Alexandra “Lexi” Hudson
THIS WEEK’S TOPIC:
Ever feel like the world has turned into an ill mannered, totally uncivilized place? A place where civility and politeness in our daily lives often feels like a thing of the past?
I recently read Alexandra “Lexi” Hudson’s new book “The Soul Of Civility: Timeless Principles To Heal Society And Ourselves.” I was blown away by the thoughtful, deep dive this book takes into this topic of civility. The book goes well beyond how we treat each other, and discusses how individual actions impact democracies. Lexi also talks about how our actions can serve as the antidote to both loneliness and to a longing for identity that too often has become intertwined with political affiliation. Perhaps most importantly and most relevant for a podcast that focuses on building and using our personal influence, we talk about the specific actions we can take to create a more civil society.
ABOUT THIS WEEK’S GUEST:
In addition to being an author and thought leader, Lexi is also the founder of Civic Renaissance — a publication and community dedicated to “beauty, goodness and truth.”
Her book — which took almost 10 years to write –is a timely, relevant, and thought provoking read as it addresses so many of the feelings, thoughts, and emotions that can be difficult to work through when the stakes feel so high during a contentious election cycle.
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN FROM THIS CONVERSATION:
The distinction between civility and politeness and why that distinction matters.
How our our personal identities in many ways have become captive to our politics, and why that’s pushing us further apart.
How we each can take responsibility for shifting our mindsets about this problem, and begin to think in terms of oriented-ness.
Some ways we can achieve a better balance between other oriented-ness, self care, and personal boundaries.

278. Can understanding your enneagram type help you crush your 2024 goals? Guest Beth McCord
2024/01/19
SHOW NOTES
Episode 278: Can understanding the enneagram help you crush your 2024 goals, or at least help increase your awareness of beahviors that might stand in your way? Enneagram Coach Beth McCord
Topic: Ever heard of enneagram?
After taking the FREE enneagram quiz offered by this week’s guest (see link below where you can take the quiz), I was curious about how the 9 types relate to each other, and how it would match up against other personality tests.
Finding ourselves in the midst of transitions or pivots can often be one of the most important times to dial into our core tendencies and understand how they may be motivating our behaviors — for better, and for worse. It can also offer a powerful tool for goal setting by helping us get more clear on our inherent motivations and emotional drivers.
THIS WEEK’S GUEST: Enneagram coach and author Beth McCord has been teaching and coaching others on the use of enneagram for more than two decades. She co-founded her business “Your Enneagram Coach” with her husband Jeff. Her passion comes from helping people better understand their personal stories and how those stories motivate their behavior.
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN EPISODE 278:
What is the enneagram?
How enneagram can act as your “rumble strip.”
What makes your own enneagram type unique to you and your story.
How the enneagram can be useful alongside other personality assessments.
Why it’s less effective to try to assign others a “type.”
How to think about enneagram, parenting, and your kids.

277. Goal setting, life mapping, and why it’s helpful to have a word of the year!
2024/01/12
Episode 277: Goal setting, life mapping, and why it’s helpful to have a word of the year!
TOPIC: Ever have trouble zeroing in on which goals will help you have the biggest impact? Maybe you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed thinking about so many different competing priorities? It can be challenging to sort through and figure out what’s truly most important. Even though it can seem like the answer to that question is “everything is a priority,” when we focus on “everything,” we often have a much harder time accomplishing anything truly meaningful.
One of the best ways to navigate this challenge is to get to the heart of what’s truly most valuable and important to you, and what aligns with your core values.
This week’s episode will help!
As you and I kick off 2024 together — happy New Year! I’m sharing my word of the year (an annual practice that I find helpful), as well as a new goal setting strategy called Life Mapping that I’m finding especially beneficial. If you’ve picked a word to guide you this year, I’d love to hear which one and why!
What you’ll learn in this episode:
Why my “leading” word of the year is “lighter,” followed closely by “collaboration” and “connecting.”
Why “Life Mapping” can be a valuable tool for helping you better align your goals with your core values.
How the life mapping process can be helpful if you are troubled (like I am) by the state of the world and struggling to find ways to have an impact.
What you can expect over the next few weeks from me and She Said/She Said Podcast including a deep dive into the enneagram with enneagram author and coach Beth McCord.
Plus, we’re launching our third annual collaboration series with The Southern C (you’ll find the complete line up from last year’s TSC in the link below!)

275. Creating festive events that build strong connection
2023/12/01
SHOW NOTES
Title: 275. Creating festive events that build strong connection
Have you ever struggled to find a group or network that supports your business goals? It can be very tricky, especially if you are looking for a group that also provides encouragement, inspiration, and tactical advice from those who are also working alongside you in the entrepreneurial trenches.
While podcasts like this one can be a great resource, nothing takes the place of direct personal connection for brainstorming ideas and getting perspective from others.
This week, as part of our continued holiday series, we’re going beyond the special touches that can make a celebration unique to focus on how to create real connection with guests (and with potential collaborators). And, how one extraordinary party planner created a place where fellow creative entrepreneurs could collaborate, support and inspire each other while also engaging in fun, festive events to showcase each other’s businesses.
THIS WEEK’S GUEST:
Lydia Menzies built Lydia Menzies Celebrates and her membership group The Super Club based on concepts that are also essential to creating real influence: connection, collaboration, creativity, kindness, and a sincere interest in helping other entrepreneurs identify their unique gifts and super powers.
You could easily refer to Lydia as “party planner extraordinaire,” but that label actually misses much of the depth and understanding of how to develop and cultivate talent that Lydia puts into the experiences and parties she creates.
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:
How understanding the influence we have on others can be key to building a truly collaborative culture;
How to navigate a common intellectual property challenge (especially important for creative entrepreneurs);
Why aligning your values with potential partners and collaborators is essential for success;
How helping others to discover their unique talents can help create true and lasting connection;
Why Lydia believes we all benefit and learn more when we collaborate with our competitors.

That’s what we did a few weeks ago at a LIVE event I co-hosted with my friend and personal branding expert Tamara Edwards. This is the first in what we hope will become a series of conversations. More on that later! But this week, I’m sharing some great audio from that event with you. Here’s why:
You’ll get several unique takes and perspectives on career pivots.

Why it can be difficult to develop and share your own point of view when you go out on your own.
EDITORIAL NOTE: Because of the live nature of the event, the audio quality for this episode is not what you have become accustomed to if you are a regular listener to this podcast. I apologize for that, but ultimately I decided that the content was both important enough and useful enough to share with you. I have also included a very helpful transcript that you can download which can be helpful as you listen along.

272. How to use a family tradition to create jobs and impact
2023/11/17
Episode 272: “Creating jobs and impact through tradition and influence”
Guest: Kate Stewart, founder/CEO, Bauble Stockings
THIS WEEK’S TOPIC:
As we kick off the holiday season, I’ll be sharing some episodes that not only include great career and business advice, but that emphasize the power of investing in others. If you’ve been following She Said/She Said for a while, you already know how much I love showcasing women entrepreneurs, especially those who have created companies that give back and create economic opportunities for others.
When we think about influence, we often see it in the way someone builds and runs her business or her office, the way she manages her team, and the way she collaborates and shares with others. Often our success is directly tied to the power of our connections and our investments in others. This week’s guest shares great perspective on this topic.
THIS WEEK’S GUEST:
Kate Stewart created a business out of a unique family tradition — the “bauble stocking.” Her company, which she named “Bauble Stockings,” partners with a Haitian company to make hand-stitched needlepoint holiday and special celebration stockings. With more than half of Haiti’s population living below the poverty line, the jobs Bauble Stockings creates helps to fuel the local economy, and creates economic opportunity for its stitchers and their families.
While the social impact part of Kate’s story is inspiring, so is her approach to collaborations, and to the consistent approach she takes to give back in other ways.
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE:
How and why Kate built Bauble Stockings;
Kate’s approach to giving back;
What Kate learned about entrepreneurship from her Dad;
How Kate approaches collaborations.
SPECIAL OFFER FOR YOU:
Kate has generously gifted FREE SHIPPING to YOU until November 30, 2023 on orders of Bauble Stockings. Just mention COUPON CODE: LAURA. Don’t delay! These stockings are a lovely and thoughtful gift, and they tend to sell fast!

271. Your closet, your pantry, and your emotional attachments! Decluttering tips just in time for the holidays!
2023/11/10
SHOW NOTES
Episode 271: Your closet, your pantry and your emotional attachments! Decluttering tips just in time for the holidays!
Guest: Carrie Peeples, master home organizer, founder Neat Smart
THIS WEEK’S TOPIC:
Getting your closet, pantry, business and life organized can help create a greater sense of calm. That’s true at any time, but especially with the holiday quickly approaching.
You might ask yourself, what does home organizing have to do with influence?
When we think about influence, one part of building and sustaining influence requires that we make investments in ourselves, in ways that help us create the conditions where we can thrive and succeed — in this case, investing the time to get more organized.
THIS WEEK’S GUEST:
Carrie Peeples is passionate about helping people make their lives easier by getting their homes organized. After years of advising family and friends, she started Marietta, Georgia-based Neat Smart in 2012, because she saw first-hand how much happier, relaxed, peaceful and in control people were after she helped them create systems to get them organized. But the real key, was making sure that the systems she created for them were easy for THEM to maintain. Carrie shares helpful organizing tips and products on Instagram @NeatSmart .
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:
How the stories we tell ourselves impact how we think about our stuff.
