Description

Old Dogs Howling is a podcast devoted to being more than halfway through life and still wanting to be fit and healthy. I’m Robert Koopmans and I’ve known Gord Cumming for more than 10 years. We’re a couple of old dogs that have trained for and finished a few marathons and a bunch of triathlons. Along the way, we’ve both realized it can be difficult to stay focussed, and we’ve learned to appreciate the value of having a way to stay motivated. In this podcast, we'll work out, measure our progress, talk to fitness experts and look for new ways that middle-aged "old dogs" can improve the quality of their lives and health. We'll look for the challenges we all face, and try to find ways past the hurdles. We'll explore different kinds of pathways to healthy living, including alternative forms of exercise, recovery strategies, diets, and other things that have the potential to affect one's pathway to healthy living. Middle-aged men face different issues than younger people when it comes to fitness. We all know aging takes a toll but it doesn't have to be limiting. The key is to keep putting one foot in front of the other, and make fitness a personal commitment. Just keep moving ...!

On this show, we’ll talk about pathways to fitness and healthy living. We’ll talk about the struggles and successes along the way, and hopefully provide ourselves – and maybe even a few other old dogs – with a little bit of extra motivation to keep going. ***** Today, Gord and I found a windy spot in a local park to talk about balancing competing demands on our time. As well, we talked about the importance of commitment to healthy living and fitness, especially when life and other interests intervene.  ***** Thanks for listening. If you have a thought or comment you want to share, send Gord or I an email at [email protected]. We’d love to hear from you.

We’ll talk about the struggles and successes along the way, and hopefully provide ourselves – and maybe even a few other old dogs – with a little bit of extra motivation to keep going.  *****  On today’s episode, Gord and I talked to Randy Nelson, a long-time runner wo has logged more than 112,000 kilometres on his feet over more than three decades. While Randy is one of those natural runners — the kind who makes it look effortless — the fact is that it has taken him   many years and lot of hard work to get to the point where he is today. His story serves as an important reminder that fitness is a commitment, no matter how naturally athletic some people might be. Being born to run doesn’t mean there is no pain, suffering or mental struggles along the way…  *****  Thanks for listening. It’s not easy to live under continual restrictions, but the fact is, we have little choice as we wait for the vaccine cavalry to arrive.   We also talk about baseline fitness testing, and how to use it as a way to measure personal growth…   *****  Thanks for listening. We chatted with Bruce Mitchell, a well-known local endurance athlete who was forced to confront a major setback after he suffered a cardiac incident after winning a triathlon several years ago. That medical emergency forced Bruce to confront some big questions, including how and why he participated in the sports he loved. Back to Swimming: How to Get Back in the Water After Months or Even Years Away ...

We’ll talk about the struggles and successes along the way, and hopefully provide ourselves – and maybe even a few other old dogs – with a little bit of extra motivation to keep going.  *****  In today’s episode, you’re going to hear a lot of talk about swimming, because both Gord and I know that the ability to swim is central to whether or not you participate in triathlon. For both of us it’s been a while since were in the water and knew it was time to take the plunge once again. To help move us along, we chatted with a couple of people with different experiences around swimming. Brad Dalke is a former Canadian national swimmer and a competitive swim coach who offered us some great advice about ways to make improvement in the pool, even for those who are just starting out.  And we also talked to Terry Lowe, a Kamloops businessman who has a remarkable story about overcoming his fear of the water to learn how to swim in his late 40s. Terry has gone on to compete in several triathlons, including a few half Ironmans. His story will inspire anyone who looks at the water nervously …  But before we hear from Terry and Brad,  Gord and I got together to talk about the past couple of weeks of activity. Both of us committed to make 2021 a rebound year for fitness and healthy living, and we’re off to a good start …  *****  Terry Lowe had a near-death experience in the ocean when he was seven years old. That trauma left him terrified of the water, and he has sat on the sidelines of swimming since.   In his last 40s, however, a newfound interest in running and triathlons sparked in Terry a desire to confront that fear and do something about it. Over the course of many months, he faced his fears and with the help of a swimming coach, learned how to swim.   Terry has great advice for people in the same boat. “If I can do it, anyone can do it,” he told us, and after listening to how he did it, it’s hard to think otherwise.  *****  Brad Dalke is a lifelong swimmer who has made teaching others the value of swimming his life’s mission. He is a competitive swim coach who has been teaching kids and adults the ins and outs of swimming for more than 30 years.   Brad offers us some great advice about simple ways to make the task of learnng to swim easier and more enjoyable.  *****  Thanks for listening. If you have a thought or comment you want to share, send Gord or I an email at [email protected]. We’d love to hear from you.
