#51 Color & Creativity - Photos & Art - Tara Leslie
2022/03/30
Join Leslie as we talk about colour... how to capture accurate color, edit color and how to use it creatively.
Color is such a huge topic. It was an absolute pleasure to break it down a bit and talk about the challenges and joys of working with color. If you watch the YT version, I also demonstrate how quickly you can do advanced color correction in Lightroom mobile.

#50 Smart Phone Smart Editing - Jo Bradford Interview - Snapseed
2022/03/23
Join Jo as she discusses her new book Smart Phone Smart Photo Editing. We will explore why she chose Snapseed as the app to break down the tools and provide many varied example editing workflows. During our conversation, we talked about why photo editing is an important skill and the 'visual divide' between what you and the camera sees and matching your photo intention. We also talked about the editing process used in a couple of Jo's examples. This was a fun interview.

#48 - Behind The Scenes - Making of '30 Days Of Lightroom Mobile'
2022/03/13
OK... a late start to the year. I have been super busy creating my latest course 30 Days Of Lightroom Mobile.
I am excited to go behind the scenes a little and show you what it takes to create a course like this. Obviously, this is just a fraction. I would bore you silly if I talked about all the proofeading, copying and pasting text between systems, uploading photos to platforms... This is just a bit of an overview to show the value - without being salesy!
Enjoy

#46 Running A Mobile Photography Community - Lee Cocker
2021/12/19
During this enjoyable and informative conversation with Lee Cocker from the Mobile Only Photography Facebook group, we covered the below questions and more. I discovered Lee after joining his Facebook group. I was instantly impressed with both the level of engagement and the incredibly friendly and supportive culture. We discuss the benefits for everyone joining and contributing to a photography community.
Tell us about your Facebook community – who is it for, who does it attract? Why did you create this community - what did you set out to achieve (goal) with your community? Why did you choose FB over Instagram, Flicker or other options? How do you attract members – website content or appearances on other groups? How do you keep your members engaged and coming back? I see so many members commenting which is so much more valuable than the popularity likes – what do you think contributes to that culture that you and the existing members created? It takes a lot of effort to run photo themes, curate content, seek speakers and other engagement strategies… why do it – what do you personally get out of it instead of joining an existing group?
Lee is selective of who he approves access to the Facebook group... the first step in a process to create the culture. After listening/watching if you believe you are a great fit, go check out the community at Mobile Only Photography - https://www.facebook.com/groups/372112596784060

#45 Assess Your Photo Literacy Using Bloom's Taxonomy
2021/12/13
In previous tutorials, we've discussed how you can add to the storytelling and visual impact of your photos and how to be a more intentional mobile photographer. Today, we're going to take those skills and kick them up a notch so that by the end of this article, you'll be on your way to being an expert in photographic intention and storytelling.
First, we'll go over the term 'photo literacy,' in detail. Then, I'll explain Bloom's Taxonomy and how you can use it to assess and improve your photo literacy. Finally, you'll learn the 'dont's' of photo literacy and how you can avoid them.

#42 What Is Juxtaposition, Contrast & Figure To Ground
2021/11/27
This episode is the audio extracted from a YouTube video delivered as part of a 30 day Live series on YouTube, delivering photo composition every day. I selected this episode to share on the podcast as you do not really need to see the visuals to get great value out of this one.
We explore the definition and examples of juxtaposition, contrast and the design concept figure to ground.
The most simple definition of juxtaposition is the contrast of two things. The use of the figure to ground concept in photography is having a separation between the subject (figure) and background (ground). This separation can be created through isolation or contrasts in colours, tones, textures, shapes, alignments, directions, heights, and sizes. We go deep in this one.
Enjoy

#41 20 Question Pre Photo Checklist
2021/11/24
So often, we do things intuitively without any thought. Taking photos on your smartphone is no different. This was an interesting exercise to actually pause and start noting the different observations and decisions pre photo. It is kind of a photo checklist that I did not realise that I was doing. I have compiled the list and included related articles and videos that expand on each tip.
I have written an article to expand on the 20 pre photo checklist items mentioned in this episode at https://www.smartphonephotographytraining.com/capturing-photos/20-tip-pre-photo-checklist
Inside the article I have referenced related articles and videos related to each item.
Here is the list:
1. Clean the lens!
2. What is my subject or photo intention?
3. Am I close enough to emphasise the subject and still capture the context?
4. Should I hold the phone vertical or horizontal?
5. Is the background clutter-free and distant enough to provide depth?
6. What is the light quality, direction and intensity?
7. Does an alternative height or angle create a more interest perspective?
8. How does this scene make me feel? Create mood through light, colour and composition?
9. Where is the subject positioned and how do they interact with other elements in the frame?
10. Should I use the rule of thirds or an alternative compositional technique?
11. Are there available leading lines existing in the photo opportunity?
12. How does my eye flow through the scene? Are there distractions pulling my attention the wrong way?
13. Do I need to override the auto mode and use a camera replacement app to access manual control?
14. Would this be a great opportunity to use the portrait, live focus or another mode available on my smartphone?
15. Is tack-sharp focus critical in the photo?
16. Do I need to shoot in RAW for extensive editing or printing or is JPEG file format sufficient (95% of the time)
17. Is this intended to be a black and white image?
18. Do I need to use a tripod or a lens attachment?
19. Do I need this photo?
20. You check the photo and are not initially satisfied. Do you need to check the list of questions again?

#40 Mobile Macro Photography Tripod Setup
2021/11/16
Learn about my setup for macro photography on the smartphone. There is no perfect solution for every photo. Having a flexible tripod, a second that holds the smartphone at ground level and an option to attach lights for side or fill lighting is a pretty awesome combination.
