Description

Breaking Waves: Seattle is the riveting story of the Seattle grunge scene, which came to define rock in the 1990s. The show traces the local roots of the music, and details the rise and fall of the grunge scene, including the triumphs and tragedies experienced by artists and fans. The series features new first-hand accounts from the people who made this scene happen, including Seattle music legends Duff McKagan, Kim Thayil and Jerry Cantrell; iconic DJ Marco Collins; label executives Michael Goldstone and Debi Lipetz; Seattle music insiders Daniel House and Charles Cross; and many others. The show concludes with a look toward the futureā€”examining the legacy of the ā€˜90s scene and highlighting artists carrying the cityā€™s music forward, such as Ben Gibbard, Ayron Jones, Eva Walker, Travis Thompson and others who will create Seattleā€™s next Breaking Wave. Narrated by Ryan Castle, Program Director of KISW in Seattle. Produced by Osiris Media for Audacy.

Can You Hear Us? The New Puget Sound

In the finale of Breaking Waves: Seattle, we look at the collapse of the scene in 1997, and how Seattle struggled to find a new musical identity. From the ashes of grunge, a new scene began to form, focused around emerging genres such as indie rock and electronic music.Ā  We wrap up the series by looking at the legacy of grunge, and examine the bands that followed, and new artists who are taking Seattle in new musical directions. Weā€™ll hear from Ben Gibbard, Sir Mix-a-Lot, Ayron Jones, Eva Walker, label executive Josh Rosenfeld, and many others as they describe how Seattleā€™s current wave of musicians have continued to build from the DIY foundation created by the pioneers of the ā€˜90s. The final episode of Breaking Waves: Seattle is both a portrait and a love letter to one of Americaā€™s most enduring music scenes. Breaking Waves was produced for Audacy by Osiris Media. For Audacy, Executive Producers are Tim Murphy and Corey Podolsky. Creative Directors are Dave Richards, Leslie Scott and Ryan Castle. Overblown

On episode three of Breaking Waves: Seattle, we continue the story with Seattle as a dominant force in pop culture. The ā€œBig Fourā€ā€”Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Alice In Chainsā€”were the preeminent rock acts in the world, and Seattleā€™s influence could be felt everywhere, in movies, TV, radio and even fashion.Ā  Everybody wanted a piece of the Emerald City, but was the scene ready for that kind of exposure? In this episode, we examine the shock of the grunge boom, the follow-ups to 1991ā€™s groundbreaking releases, the struggles faced by the cityā€™s new grunge celebrities, the loss of Seattleā€™s most iconic rock legend, and the eventual collapse of the scene due to the heavy weight of expectations and the demands of fame. Next on Breaking Waves: Seattle: The scene is dead, long live the scene. A proud new generation of Seattle music rises from the ashes of grunge. Breaking Waves was produced for Audacy by Osiris Media. For Audacy, Executive Producers are Tim Murphy and Corey Podolsky. Creative Directors are Dave Richards, Leslie Scott and Ryan Castle. Episode two of Breaking Waves: Seattle begins with the release of what Charles Cross has labeled ā€œthe purest statementā€ of the grunge movementā€”the seminal Temple of the Dog album, created in memory of the late Andrew Wood.Ā  At the same time, Pearl Jam was formed, Nirvana was gathering strength and Soundgarden was refining their iconic metal-influenced sound. Then, in the Fall of ā€˜91, the Seattle scene produced three of the most influential rock albums of all time: Pearl Jamā€™s ā€œTen,ā€ Soundgardenā€™s ā€œBadmotorfinger,ā€ and Nirvanaā€™s ā€œNevermind.ā€ Following this, there was no going back. Seattle had transformed itself from a small local scene into the center of the musical universe. Next on Breaking Waves: Seattle: after the scene rides the wave to the top, who will survive the crash that follows? Breaking Waves was produced for Audacy by Osiris Media. For Audacy, Executive Producers are Tim Murphy and Corey Podolsky. Creative Directors are Dave Richards, Leslie Scott and Ryan Castle. Great podcast but clearly not local
Pronunciation of local towns is way off.

Great podcast, but felt like it left some stuff out
Really enjoyed this podcast, but kind of disappointed that they left out some of the heavy hitters of country music and itā€™s history to the city
