When James says it’s a dog-eat-dog world, I don’t blame him. 제임스가 우리는 약육강식의 세상이라고 말할 때, 난 그를 비난하지 않았어. Alice : Above all, only few are content to make a living by the sweat of their brow! 무엇보다, 이마의 구슬땀을 흘리며 생계를 유지하는 것에 만족하는 사람은 거의 없을 거야. Jack : You know what? 그거 알아? The thought of this rat race gives me a lump in my throat! 경쟁 사회를 생각하면 목이 메여!

Kathy : Are you sure we’ll get away with this? 진짜 이렇게 해도 되겠어? Carl : Stay loose! 편하게 있어. It’s all under control. 잘 되고 있어. I feel myself the big cheese here, not that empty-headed nerd. 난 멍청한 괴짜가 아니라 굉장히 중요한 사람처럼 느껴져. Kathy : I see! 그렇구나. You’re literally a big fish in a small pond! 너 진짜 작은 연못에 사는 큰 물고기구나!

Haven’t you heard the proverb that says “look before you leap”? ‘돌 다리도 두들겨보고 건너라’ 란 속담 못 들어봤어? Peter : She just walked away. 그냥 가버렸어. I wish the ground would have swallowed me! 나 진짜 땅으로 꺼져 버리고 싶다! Alice : Never mind. 걱정 마! I’ll straighten it out. 내가 해결해볼 게. But make sure you don’t screw it up once more. 더 이상 일을 망치지 않는다고 약속해. Peter : I’ll have to apologize to her as soon as possible or do her a big favor. 그녀한테 빨리 사과하거나 큰 보답을 해야 할 거 같아. You know; one swallow doesn't make a summer! 한 번 실수한 거 가지고, 크게 확대하지 말자! Alice: Fine then! 알았어! You don’t have to go hard on yourself anymore. 더 이상 자책 하지마.

Jane : Bear in mind that David has got lots of fans! 데이비드가 팬이 많다는 걸 기억해봐! If he was here, thousands would be around. 그가 여기온다면 수천명이 몰려들걸. Jessie: Good idea! 좋은 생각이야! But do you think David would string along with us through thick and thin? 이런 어려운 상황 속에서도 데이비드가 우리랑 함께 할까? Jane : Should I give him a ring now? 지금 전화해볼까? Jessie : Sure! The sooner the better! 좋지! 빠를수록 더 좋아. Jane : Look who is there. 누가왔나 봐. That’s Mary. 메리네. Isn’t she? 맞지? It’s a small world! 세상 좁다.

Jane : Did you? 그랬어? I wonder when will you grow out of your wheeling and dealing? 너 언제까지 그런 모습 (수단과 방법을 가리지 않는 모습)에서 벗어날래? Jessie: You insist on your being ungrateful! 너는 배은망덕한 짓을 고집하고 있네! I went out of my way to take care of you while you were sick! 나는 니가 아플 때 너를 돌봐주는 일까지 했잖아. Jane : Stop milking it for heaven’s sake! 그만 좀 우려먹어! How many time should I return this favor? 얼마나 더 갚아줘야 해? Jessie : Come on! 제발! All I need is attention and recognition. 내가 필요한 건 관심과 인정이야. Jane : Well, I’ll make it up for you. 글쎄, 내가 만회할게. But I’m against the concept of you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours! 근데 주고받기 식의 발상은 좀 별로인 거 같아.

Martin : Why don’t they have a go at a comeback? 그 사람들이 왜 컴백을 시도해보는 게 어떨까? This time they will sink or swim. 이번이 죽기 아니면 살기가 될거야. Thomas: Do you think they have what it takes? 그들이 그럴 능력이 있는 거 같아? That film is probably their swan song. 이 영화는 아마 그들의 마지막 작품이 될 거야. Martin : Do you think they are going to the dogs? 일이 망할거라고 생각하니? Thomas : Who knows? 누가 알아? I heard they’re recruiting some has-been performers who may save the day. 그들이 한물간 배우들을 모집하고 있다고 들었어. 그 사람들이 살려낼 수 있을 지도 모르지.

Martin : I told you over and over to start your own business, do your best to make a go of it and rest assured you will be on easy street. 내가 너한테 여러 번 얘기했잖아. 니 사업 시작하라고, 사업 성공시킬 수 있게 최선을 다하라고, 그러면 니 삶이 탄탄대로에 놓일 거라고. Thomas: Yeah; I need some guts! 맞아. 난 용기가 필요해! I’m fed up with the dog’s life. 난 이렇게 힘든 삶에 지쳤어. Why don’t you become my partner? 내 사업 파트너가 되는 건 어때? Martin : Excuse me Thomas! 뭐라고! You’ve got a commitment issue. 너 약속을 잘 안 지키잖아. Simply you can’t stick to your guns! 간단하게 얘기하자면, 너 끝까지 끌고 나가지 않잖아. I will say it boldly; you’re a quitter! 대놓고 얘기했는데, 너 금방 잘 그만두잖아! You just end up on skid row! 너 거지 됐잖아! Thomas : This time is different! 이번에는 달라! It’s going to be the turning point in my life. 내 삶의 전환점이 될거야. Martin : Then; put your best foot forward. 그렇다면 최선을 다해봐.

I was on the edge of my seat all along! 나는 내내 손에 땀을 줬어! Martin : So was I! 나도 그랬어! I was shook-up as well. 나도 떨렸어. It gave me the jitters! 영화가 공포감을 줬어. Jessie: That ruthless giant wiped out tens of people. 무자비한 거인이 수십명의 사람들을 쓸어버렸어. I caught on that he would be the villain the first scene he appeared. 그가 악당이 될 거라는 걸 첫 장면에서부터 눈치챘어. Martin : He bumped off all of them without blinking an eye! 그가 눈하나 깜짝 안하고 죽였어. Jessie : What made him go berserk in your opinion? 그가 광적으로 변한 이유가 뭐라고 생각해? Martin : The rats, of course. 그 나쁜 놈들 때문이지. It’s no-brainer. 너무 당연해.

Won’t you grab a bite before you leave? 떠나기 전에 뭐 좀 먹을래? What’s the hurry? 뭐가 급해? Stewart : Mum’s the word. 비밀이야. I’m on a diet and I’m trying to avoid any food that’s out of season. 나 다이어트 중이야. 제철이 아닌 음식은 피하려고 하고 있어. David: That’s a hogwash! 말도 안돼! Your problem isn’t food. 너의 문제는 음식이 아니야. What you need is food for thought. 넌 생각이 필요한 거야. Stewart : We had better not wash our dirty linen in public! I suppose. 공개적으로 얘기하지 말자. David : You chump! 바보야! What are you driving at? 뭘 얘기하는 거야? Stewart : Your crazy cravings! 니가 진짜 좋아하는 거 말야! Your sweet tooth! 너 단 거 좋아하는 거! You’re barking up the wrong tree, dude! 너 번지수 잘 못 짚었어. All you need is a bit of workout. 니가 필요한 건 운동이야.

Josef : She shouldn’t have! 그러지 말았어야 했어. No receipts no returns; that’s a simple rule of thumb.영수증 없이 환불이 안되는 건 기본 상식인 거 아니야. Suzan: Really? 정말? Where is the common sense in that? 상식은 다 어디로 간거야? They know her very well. 그들은 엄마를 잘 알아. She’s one of their most loyal customers. 엄마는 단골 고객 중에 한 명이잖아. That’s why she was offended. 그래서 엄마가 기분이 상했어. Josef : Well, I don’t want to be judgmental, but well-respected shops aren’t supposed to go hard with their customers. 나 이러쿵 저러쿵하고 싶진 않지만, 원래 평판 좋은 가게들은 고객들에게 심하게 대하지 않잖아. Suzan : That’s right. 맞아. After a long argument, the seniors stepped in and helped us. 긴 논쟁 끝에 위에 상사가 와서 우릴 도왔어. Josef : Yeah; I’d say! 그렇지! It’s all because of these greenhorn sales people. 미숙한 판매 사원이 있어서 그런가봐!

How did I let it go unnoticed? 내가 어떻게 모르고 지나갔지? Jane : Don’t beat yourself up! 자책 하지마! Better late than never. 아예 안 하는 것보단 늦게 라도 하는 게 낫다. George: It’s no exaggeration to say that this book is worth its weight in gold. 과장하려는 건 아닌데, 이 책은 가치가 있어. Jane : Is it? 그래? I’m getting curious! 궁금해지는데! Do you mind if I borrow it for a while? 내가 좀 빌려가도 될까? George : I’m afraid not. 안될거 같아. Don’t get me wrong but the topics raised in it are over your head. 오해하지마. 여기에 나온 주제들이 좀 어려워. If you read it on your own, you may lose it. 너 혼자 읽게 되면, 잘 이해하지 못할 거야. Jane: Hand it over to me already! 빨리 빌려줘! You’re underestimating my intellectual capabilities, aren’t you? 너 내 지적능력을 낮게 보는 거지? George: Far from it. 아니야. That’s out of the question! 말도 안돼!
